Dr Niyaz, a resident of Kannur, who is currently pursuing second year MD at Yenepoya Hospital suffered injuries when he was attacked during examining a girl, who had come along with a group of women.
The attack on doctor was carried out after accusing him of sexually assaulting the patient while examining her.
However, one of the staff of the hospital said that the entire episode seemed to be preplanned one. The girl had come to hospital along with few women with an apparent intention to assault the doctor for no fault of his, she said.
Jurisdictional Ullal police is interrogating the case.
Official clarification
Meanwhile hospital management has rubbished all allegations against the doctor and said that entire incident was the handiwork of few miscreants.
In an official clarification letter issued by Dr Prakash Harischandra, on behalf of the hospital, stated that on Monday, in the pulmonary medicine outpatient of the hospital Dr Niyaz was assaulted by fellow by standers in the respiratory medicine outpatient department during the course of the day.
“The incident transpired as below, Dr. Niyaz was auscultating a female referral patient in the outpatient department, he noticed an unrelated fellow bystander video recording the incident, at which he objected about their action. This infuriated the bystanders leading to a physical assault on the physician. The incident was in presence of other medical staff and patients. He has been directed by his Department Head to avoid approaching the legal redressal system i.e. police dept. to avoid unnecessary complication, which is quite unfortunate,” the letter said.
“As per duties of a doctor, under oath whenever you come to witness exploitation of a patient, it's your legal duty to inform the law enforcement agency to necessitate action. Such a fine physician adhering to his principal of objecting wrong was subjected to physical violence and humiliated in our esteemed university. To add to agony his superior instead of fighting injustice which our constitution and the founding father of the nation's taught us to uphold on the contrary to humbly accept it, which is a distraught sign even necessitating notice to the state medical council,” it said.
The letter explained the chain of events that took place in last few days including unwarranted telephone abuse of a duty PG- 30 Jan 2014, sexual harassment of a duty female nursing staff (since complaint wished to be incognito) on Feb 8 and the assault on doctor.
“The affected individual lies down in SICU having performed his duty undergoing physical pain, mental suffering and to nurse the wounded ego for years with a mental scar which may not heal adequately. Where is the esteemed university heading to? I leave this to your analogy, if highlighted to the media and the affiliated medical support organization of doctors could place the college in disrepute. The course of events has mandated measures to be taken to reinstall confidence among the students, residents, paramedical and non-teaching staff to provide a safe working environment. I wish this letter be not taken as a hindrance but as my previous email depicted the tip of the iceberg phenomenon,” said Dr Harischandra, in his letter to the vice-chancellor of the university.
