Kasargod, Feb 14: Kasargod police seized drug-laced toffee packets, sold over-the-counter, from a shop in Kasaragod on Thursday.
A team of police personnel led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Hemanth Nath raided a shop, owned by Anwar Sadath, situated at the market road here around 2.30 pm and seized 16 packets of the drug-laced toffees from the outlet, said P F Antony, ASI, Town Police Station.
While four packets of the seized toffees were found to have high narcotic content, the remaining were found to have milder drug presence, the official said.
Sold under the brand name of 'Darling - pan mint' the product was manufactured by a Hyderabad-based fictitious firm, he said. The seizure was tipped off by Students Police Cadets (SPC), who called in the local police.
The seized toffees would be sent to the forensic laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday to subject them to detailed chemical examination, said the police.
A case against the shop keeper would be registered after the test report. The police said the drug-laced sweets are freely available in various pockets in neighbouring Karnataka as well.
