Mangalore, Dec 27: Condemning the alleged kidnap and blackmail of two medical students by a gang last week, the district unit of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) came down heavily against the failure of the district administration and elected representatives in preventing instances of moral policing and crimes against youth in Dakshina Kannada.

Addressing demonstrators in the protest organized in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday, DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla said that district administration along with the police department had failed to check moral policing in the district.

Slamming the elected political leaders from the region U T Khader, B Ramanath Rai and Abhayachandra Jain, he said that the ones who had given assurances before coming to power of wiping out moral policing in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, had failed to do so.

“By making use of the opportunities we gave them, the leaders came to power. Although they are capable of wiping out instances of moral policing in the district, they choose to remain silent over this issue,” he stated, adding that the trio had to take responsibility of ending the menace of moral policing and restoring law and order in the district.

Till the time the kind of elected representatives who exist merely for name and fame remain in power, there will not be any peace in the district, he added.

He warned the youth against following the anti-social activities propagated by existing saffron groups and brigades in the name of religion. These saffron leaders who fill hatred of other communities in the minds of young people are the slayers of civic sense in the society, he said.

Group condemns 'moral policing'

The Karnataka wing of the Akhila Bharat Janvadi Mahila Sanghatane has condemned what it termed as “moral policing” in the district.

The organisation has called for stringent action against those responsible for assaulting a boy and a girl on Wednesday in Pilikula; those who attacked a resident of Salethur in Puttur taluk last week for allegedly talking to a woman, and against those who kidnapped two medical students in Deralakatte, allegedly forced them into sexual acts and blackmailed them.

It demanded that district police ensure the safety of citizens and youth.

NRI professionals hailing from the coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka, now based in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Australia, have been urging the Indian government and airlines to introduce a direct flight between Mangalore International Airport (MIA) and Singapore’s Changi Airport.

These professionals argue that Singapore’s strategic location as a hub connecting India with East Asia makes this flight essential. They highlight that this route would serve over 12 million people from the coastal and hill regions of southern India, fostering stronger ties with East Asian economies.

The group, consisting of individuals from Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Shivamogga, and Hassan, is spearheaded by Rajesh H Acharya, director of HQ Connections Pte Ltd, Singapore, and coordinator of the Singapore Tuluver community. Acharya emphasized the significance of the Indian government’s Act East policy, which aims to strengthen relationships between India and ASEAN, East Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region.

“This flight will open new doors for cultural, trade, tourism, and technological exchanges between these regions,” Acharya said.

The Mangalore Chapter of IndUS Entrepreneurs (TiE) has also proposed positioning the region as the 'Silicon Beach of India.' A direct flight would provide greater opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors from both Singapore and Mangaluru, boosting business exchanges.

Moreover, Singapore’s Changi Airport could see increased tourism from the Karnataka coast, while Coastal Karnataka would benefit from a surge in visitors from ASEAN countries, the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, and the US West Coast.

While a similar attempt in 2017 did not succeed, Acharya and his team are hopeful that this time their appeal will be taken seriously, tapping into the immense growth potential of the eastern half of the globe.
