Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that it was saddening that such false claims were made that the party's national leader had assets worth over Rs 12,000 crores in a leading American news website two days ago.
It is essential to check the authenticity of the claim before publishing it as a news report. It is wrong to publish news without testing its legitimacy, he said, condemning the claim.
He went on to say that Mrs Gandhi could have easily become the President or the Prime Minister of the country, but had sacrificed the positions for Pratibha Patil and Pranab Mukherjee. False reports should not be encouraged by media houses, which should check the authenticity of the news before publishing them, he said.
However, the American website deleted the name of Sonia Gandhi from the list of richest leaders of the world on Tuesday, shortly after the Congress derided the website and questioned the authenticity of the figure.
Congress leader Ivan D'Souza and others were present in the press conference.
