Mangalore, Jan 19: The first phase of pulse polio drive in Mangalore commenced on Sunday.
As many as 921 pulse polio booths have been set up in Dakshina Kannada district to administer polio drops to children below five years of age.
Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim administered pulse polio at Wenlock Hospital in the city.
The National Pulse Polio Programme, 2014, whose aim is eradication of polio, will be held in two phases in Dakshina Kannada district.
It would be held on all four days in Mangalore City and on the first three dates in rural areas.
Last case of polio in the district was detected in 1999 and India was declared free of polio in 2004.
A total of 1,68,336 children in the 0 to 5 age group would be given polio drops at 921 centres, with the help of 38 transit teams and 3,814 volunteers in the district.
