Mangalore, Feb 14: The Dakshina Kannada district administration, the zilla panchayat, the Department of Horticulture and Siri Horticulture Society will jointly organise a flower show on February 14 at Kadri Park here.
Addressing the media persons on Thursday, H R Yogesh, Deputy Director, Department of Horticulture, Dakshina Kannada, said that the highlight of the event will be the Kambala.
The park will be decorated with 50,000 deep red Dutch roses which will be brought from outside the park.
The three-day event would have 40 exhibition stalls, of which 10 are from the government and the rest are of nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) and self-help groups (SHGs). One stall will have 20 to 30 exhibits from Ooty. The park itself has 8,000 pots with 50 varieties of flowers.
This year, one Mangalore resident will also get a collection of orchids for display at the flower show. Vegetable carving and flower decorations will also be part of the event.
A terrace and kitchen garden programme will be held as part of show this year. Two hundred participants will be selected and trained in the programme. The Horticulture Department will give them, free of cost, a “seed mini kit” consisting of 10 to 15 varieties of seeds suitable for growing in Mangalore. They are part of the beneficiaries of the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana — 1,500 in Mangalore and 500 in Bantwal.
Mr. Yogesh said the flower show would be inaugurated by Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology and District in-charge Ramanath Rai. J.R. Lobo., MLA, Mangalore South, would preside over the event.
Pradeep D'Souza, Senior Assistant Director, Department of Horticulture, Dakshina Kannada, said Kadri Park had no local water source. The plants were watered with waste water pumped from Bendore.
Lakshmi Rao Aroor, Siri Horticulture Society (formed by the Department of Horticulture) and Judith Mascarenhas, representing the public, were at the meeting. Ms. Mascarenhas said entry was free of cost to the event, which would be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
