Manglauru, Jul 3: Fr Peter Paul Saldanha has been appointed new Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mangaluru by the Vatican. The announcement was made on Tuesday, at the Bishop’s House in Mangaluru.
Fr Saldanha was born on April 27, 1964, in Kirem parish and was ordained on May 6, 1991. He has served as assistant priest at Moodubelle parish and at Milagres parish in Mangaluru diocese.
At Rome, he earned a Licentiate in 2001 and PhD in Biblical Revelation in 2005 from Pontifical Urban University where he had served as the faculty as well.
He has authored a book titled ‘The Church: Mystery of Love and Communion’ which reveals his knowledge and commitment to the church.
Fr Saldanha will be the 14th Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese which was established in 1886. The diocese has 124 parishes with 248,860 Catholics. He will replace Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, who served as the Bishop for 22 since 1996. Fr D’Souza will remain Apostolic Administrator till the newly appointed bishop takes over charge.
