Mangaluru, Aug 15: Dakshina Kannada celebrated the 71st Independence Day with a spirit of patriotism and unity as people gathered at Nehru Maidan in the heart of the city to witness the unfurling of the National Flag on Tuesday.
Minister of Forests, Environment and Ecology and District In-charge B Ramanath Rai hoisted the tricolour and received the guard of honour before inspecting the parade.
A colourful march past by platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police, District Armed Reserve Police, civil police, traffic police, home guards, fire and emergency services personnel, NCC Army wing (senior), NCC Naval wing (senior), NCC Air wing (senior), scouts and guides and other battalions was part of the celebrations. The parade was followed by a cultural programme by the school students.
I-Day message
In his I-Day address, Mr Rai urged the people embrace the values upheld by the great freedom fighters, many of whom sacrificed their lives for the country. He also urged the people to take a pledge to defeat the evil forces that are hampering the growth of this country today.
“We are Indians and we should love and respect each and every Indian irrespective of their caste, creed and religion,” he said.
