Mumbai, May 2: Almost seven years after the shocking murder of veteran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey in Mumbai, a city court has convicted gangster Chhota Rajan in the case.
Dey, 56, was the Editor (Investigations) of Mid-Day. He was shot dead on July 11, 2011, at Powai, one of the posh central suburbs of Mumbai.
Along with Rajan, journalist Jigna Vora, the then deputy bureau chief of Mumbai edition of The Asian Age, were among the accused.
However, Jigna Vora and another accused Paulson Joseph were acquitted
Of the total 12 accused, nine have been convicted. One accused, Vinod Chembur, a bookie and builder who financed the crime, died a couple of years ago.
Dey had authored two books – ‘Khallas: An A to Z Guide to the Underworld’ and ‘Zero Dial: The Dangerous World of Informers’ – and was in the process of writing the third book – ‘Chindi: Rags to Riches’.
The investigations were transferred from the Powai police station to the Crime Branch-CID of Mumbai Police. Later, when Rajan was arrested, the case went to the CBI.
In the third book, Dey had portrayed Rajan as “chindi” (inconsequential or petty) and not as “don” and this had apparently angered Rajan.
The investigation revealed that Jigna Vora was in touch with Rajan and she had provoked the don, who ultimately ordered the journalist to be murdered.
