Bangalore, Jan 18: In an emotional appeal to strengthen the Janata Dal (Secular) with Lok Sabha elections around the corner, the party national president and former prime minister H?D?Deve Gowda on Friday said he was “reluctantly” contesting from Hassan for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

The 82-year-old JD(S)?leader said he was not at all keen on contesting for an MP?seat.

“However, on account of the existing political situation, and for the future of this nation, I?am contesting this time. It is also imperative for the survival of the party,” he said. Gowda, who is a five-time MP, will be seeking a sixth time re-election from Hassan for the Lok Sabha elections.

At a convention of all JD(S)? leaders from across the State, Gowda said the JD(S)?was fighting for its survival and that it will depend upon the strength which the party leaders will show at the upcoming elections.

He attacked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for having 'deserted' the JD(S) which propelled his political career and then making claims of being an Ahinda leader. “The man who ate rice from our party (meaning well benefited) plate is now a big man and speaking against us,” he ridiculed.

Gowda said most of the leaders who have left the JD(S) or those who are in the process of leaving, were supposed to build the party but have completely betrayed it.

The former prime minister slammed both the BJP's?prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and the AICC?vice- president Rahul Gandhi for “making tall claims but having no vision for the country”. Party leader H?D?Kumaraswamy sent across a message to the people of Karnataka that they should vote for Deve Gowda, who is present in the State, rather than vote for Modi who will be sitting in New Delhi.

“Our call will be 'Karnataka Ulisi' (Save Karnataka). None of the two national parties is showing any interest in the development of Karnataka. While one is attempting to save India, the other is busy projecting the youth of the nation. But both of them are not bothered about Karnataka,” he said.

Two women candidates likely

JD(S)? national president H?D?Deve Gowda said the party will make room for at least two women candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

While his daughter-in-law Anita Kumaraswamy is most likely to contest from Bangalore Rural constituency again, speculations are rife on the second woman candidate. Gowda said:?“We can even ask Cheluvarayaswamy to field his wife. I am sure he can ensure a win.” However, it is said the party may settle for a woman candidate for Shimoga seat. Party's Soraba MLA Madhu Bangarappa has been asked to field a candidate of his choice. And, in all probability, a woman member of his family may enter the fray.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday backed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over his claim that the BJP had offered Rs 50 crore each to 50 Congress MLAs in an attempt to "topple" the state government.

Addressing reporters here, Shivakumar, also the Congress state president, said, “The BJP indeed lured 50 Congress MLAs with Rs 50 crore each.”

He defended Siddaramaiah’s statement and said the Congress MLAs were briefed about the BJP’s alleged 'Operation Lotus', a term used to describe the BJP's attempts to destabilise ruling governments through horse-trading.

“Some of our MLAs informed the Chief Minister about this matter, and he, in turn, shared it with the media,” Shivakumar said.

At an event in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah reiterated the claim that "none of the Congress MLAs had accepted the offer".

He also accused the BJP of filing false cases against him in a bid to "remove him and overthrow his government".

The BJP has yet to respond to the allegations.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged embezzlement of Waqf properties. This demand follows findings from the Anwar Manippady committee's report, which reveals that while 54,000 acres of land are registered with the Waqf Board, approximately 29,000 acres have been misappropriated.

Capt. Chowta emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating, “A comprehensive probe should be conducted based on this report. Those who have illegally encroached on these properties must be held accountable.”

He challenged the Congress party, suggesting that if they genuinely care for the Muslim community and underprivileged women, their members should actively participate in the Joint Parliamentary Committee discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. This participation is essential to ensure that Waqf properties are used effectively for community welfare.

The MP criticized the notices served to farmers in Honvada village, Vijayapura, which stated that nearly 1,200 acres of their ancestral land was being reassigned to the Waqf Board. He expressed that this issue arose while the NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working on amendments to the Waqf Act. He accused the Congress-led state government, particularly Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, of trying to enforce outdated 50-year-old notifications about Waqf properties. After the farmers raised concerns, Minister M. B. Patil clarified that the confusion was due to an error in the gazette.

Chowta alleged that Congress members in the Joint Parliamentary Committee are obstructing proceedings and causing disruptions. He expressed suspicion that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah might have instructed Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan to implement these outdated notifications regarding Waqf properties. As a result, he demanded the Minister's resignation.

He accused the Congress party of exploiting Muslim voters for the past 75 years without making substantial efforts for their welfare. Furthermore, he highlighted that the BJP is launching a campaign against land jihad, pointing out that the Waqf Board controls one of the largest land banks after the Defence and Railways sectors. Finally, he urged citizens to check the revenue records (RTC) of their land ownership to verify its status.
