Bangalore Heavy Rain 11

Bangalore, Sep 26: Heavy showers coupled with a thunderstorm and lightning lashed the city on Thursday evening, uprooting several trees and triggering floods across the city.

A light drizzle which started around 6 p.m. brought the city to its knees within a couple of hours and turned out to be the heaviest rainfall Bangalore received in a single day in September in 26 years.

The city received 130 mm of rain (recorded until 11.30 pm). The all-time record for the heaviest rainfall in September is 177 mm recorded on 12 September 1988.

In just over an hour ” between 7.20 p.m., when the rain began, and 8.30 p.m. ” the city received a whopping 89.6 mm. The heavy spell was owing to an œupper air cyclonic circulation that extended from Lakshadweep islands up to southern Karnataka, said met director B. Puttanna. The last time the figures came even close to this in the past decade was in September 2010 when the city recorded 114 mm in 24 hours.

September is traditionally the city's wettest month, recording 211 mm on an average. Heavy thundershowers are common during these final weeks of the southwest monsoon, said Mr. Puttanna said.

The met centre has forecast three more days of œmoderate to heavy rainfall in southern Karnataka, including Bangalore.

Several other parts of south-interior Karnataka received heavy rain between Wednesday and Thursday. Kolar received 120 mm and Hassan 90 mm.

Low-lying areas flooded

For residents of Anepalya, who were recovering from a harrowing experience after their houses were flooded by rain two days ago, Thursday evening was a nightmare.

The residents, who were bringing their homes back in order, had to deal with inundated homes once again. While utensils and books were seen floating, most of them lost electronic goods.

Afshan Shakeej, a resident of 5th cross in Anepalya, said her house was filled with knee-deep water. Her neighbours were unfortunate as the water-level was higher and they were forced to rush to the first floor.

œOn Tuesday, the civic body authorities assured us that the drain which was under repair would be fixed. But, they have only done superficial changes, she said.

Ms. Shakeej said the panic-stricken women and children ran out of their homes and waited for over an hour for the BBMP officials. œThere is no power in our house, our belongings are floating and we do not know what to do. We have been calling the helpline repeatedly. While officials claim that the BBMP authorities were on the spot, there is nobody here, she said.

Besides Anepalya, several low-lying areas in Byatarayanapura, Banashankari, K.S. Layout, Wilson Garden, J.P. Nagar, Kumaraswamy Layout, Koramangala, Adugodi, Ashok Nagar, Old Airport Road, K.R. Puram, Mahadevapura, Hebbal, Peenya, Malleswaram, Majestic and Chamarajpet were flooded.

Padmaja Chalasani, a Whitefield resident, complained that the compound of their building had collapsed after the rain. Many families living in the building vacated and brought their cars out, she said. In the vegetable market behind K.R. Market, eight to 10 trucks submerged and the entire street was blocked.

The stormwater entering the BCM Women's Hostel at Papareddypalya in Nagarabhavi created panic among 100 students, who were seen scurrying for cover with their belongings. The rooms, hall and kitchen remained flooded for several hours as storm water entered the building that did not have a compound wall. Complaints made to authorities in the past have fallen on deaf ears, said a student union leader.

Mangaluru: The Tannirbhavi beach stretch up to the forest department's Tree Park is on the brink of a remarkable transformation under the ‘One Beach, One Destination’ initiative. This ambitious project aims to elevate the beach into a top-tier tourist hotspot through comprehensive upgrades and strategic developments.

Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP shared updates during a press briefing on Tuesday, revealing that fresh tenders have been floated for maintaining the main beach. The technical evaluation of tenders for the Tannir Bhavi Blue Flag Beach is nearing completion, with the financial bids set to open shortly. “We are pleased to see major players participating in the tender process,” the DC remarked.

For the main beach, the maintenance contract will span 10 years. Meanwhile, the Blue Flag Beach’s successful bidder will face a progressive financial model—starting with a Rs 50 lakh payment in the first year, escalating to Rs 2 crore by the 10th year, alongside a minimum 5% revenue share for the administration. “Upon completion of the development, the beach will feature continuous activities to enhance its appeal,” he added.

Approximately 90% of the beach’s development work is already complete. Eco-friendly initiatives such as waste management systems and solar installations are operational at the Blue Flag Beach. While entrance work by Mangaluru Smart City Limited is ongoing, the beach remains accessible to the public. Entry fees, set in accordance with Blue Flag guidelines, aim to support sustainable maintenance efforts.

The ‘Blue Flag’ certification represents a global standard in eco-tourism, ensuring clean bathing water, state-of-the-art amenities, safety measures, and sustainable development. Karnataka’s Padubidri and Kasarkod beaches are among the few in India to hold this prestigious certification.

Mangaluru Smart City Limited is spearheading the development of the 1.8-acre area, with an investment of approximately Rs 16 crore. Once completed, the Tannirbhavi Beach is expected to stand out as a vibrant and eco-friendly destination, drawing tourists and locals alike.

Karnataka's Urban Development Minister, BS Suresha (Byrathi), has initiated a detailed investigation into ₹5,527 crore worth of projects executed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship Smart Cities Mission in six cities of the state.

The minister expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of work in Belagavi, Davangere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, and Tumakuru. To ensure accountability, Suresha announced the formation of a committee comprising experts from universities and the Indian Institute of Science. The committee will assess the projects and submit its findings within three months.

Bengaluru, however, is excluded from the probe as it falls under the jurisdiction of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

Launched in 2015, the Smart Cities Mission aims to enhance urban infrastructure across 100 cities in India, funded jointly by the central and state governments. Karnataka has spent ₹6,405 crore under this mission, including ₹877.72 crore in Bengaluru.

"Most of the funds have been allocated to roads, drainage, and park maintenance," Suresha lamented in a statement. "The focus should have been on creating permanent infrastructure such as smart schools, hospitals, libraries, and bus stands."

Suresha pointed out that, on average, each Smart City in Karnataka received ₹990 crore, with spending patterns revealing 36% on roads, 8% on energy, 2% on education, 2% on healthcare, and 5% on sports. He criticized this distribution, emphasizing that projects under the mission should have developed long-lasting government assets instead of temporary solutions like roads and drains.

With the mission slated to conclude in March 2025, Suresha urged the remaining funds to be directed towards constructing world-class smart schools. "This will enable children from economically weaker sections to access quality education," he said.

The minister also revealed that he had received multiple complaints from elected representatives about substandard work, particularly in Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Shivamogga. The probe, he assured, will prioritize transparency and accountability.

Mangaluru: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker and Mangalore MLA U T Khader announced two ambitious bridge projects sanctioned by the Cabinet for Mangalore constituency, aimed at reducing traffic congestion on NH 66 and promoting tourism in the region.

A new bridge, parallel to the Nethravathi bridge, will connect Kotepura to Bolara at an estimated cost of ₹200 crore. Spanning 1.5 km, it will be one of the longest bridges in the region. A consultant appointed by the Public Works Department (PWD) is currently preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Khader explained that Kotepura, once a hub of business activities before the construction of the Nethravathi bridge, will regain its prominence with the new project.

“The 12-meter-wide bridge will offer breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea, designed to enhance the experience for commuters. Once completed, it is expected to reduce 50% of the traffic on NH 66 via Pumpwell, as residents from areas like Bunder, Kudroli, and Bolar will use this route. Additionally, plans are underway to develop a scenic seaside road from Kotepura to the Kerala border, boosting tourism,” Khader elaborated.

The second bridge, connecting Sajipa Nadu to Thumbe at a cost of ₹62 crore, is set to benefit residents from Arkula, Meramajalu, and Thumbe. Presently, residents from Sajipa must travel via Melkar and Bantwal to reach Thumbe. “This bridge has been a long-standing dream of mine, and I had placed the proposal before the Chief Minister even before becoming the Speaker,” he added.

Addressing concerns about the difficulty faced by residents crossing the railway line between Thokkottu and Olapete, Khader revealed that a footbridge has been proposed, and funding is ready, awaiting railway approval.

On other topics, Khader responded to a query about the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing allegations against RR Nagar BJP MLA Munirathna. He stated that the matter would be discussed with the Assembly secretary. Regarding an MLC C T Ravi's controversial remark, Khader expressed regret and assured that the Council Chairman would address the issue.
