Karwar, Jun 22: High alert has been declared around the Project Seabird, Asia's most advanced naval base in Karwar, following reports that three unknown persons infiltrated into the area on Wednesday night.
While naval officials have not yet commented on it, a Kannada television channel claimed that the security personnel are combing the entire area.
The naval base is located at Alageri village near Ankola, in Karwar, Uttar Kannada district. It is said that three unidentified men were spotted on CCTV.
While it is not clear, who they were, the officials are not ready to take any chance after a deadly attack on Pathankot air base, last year. The police are keeping tight vigil at the National Highway 66 that passes through the naval base.
The naval base houses the INS Kadamba, the third largest Indian naval ship, commissioned by then Defence minister Pranab Mukherjee, in 2005. The INS Kadamba houses Indian Navy's most potent weapons - stealth frigates, destroyers.
The state-of-the-art naval base is also equipped with naval air station, naval armament depot, research facility and full-fledged naval ship repair yard.
