Mangalore, Jan 16: In a fresh case of hate crime, a group of miscreants allegedly belonging to a Hindutva outfit brutally assaulted two engineering students -a boy and a girl- at Surathkal beach on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday.
However, the assailants repented for attacking the girl, as they realized that she was the daughter of a BJP activist and a close relative of a prominent BJP leader from Vittla. She is a third semester student of a prestigious engineering college. She had visited the beach along with her best friend from the same college.
The girl revealed her identity to the assailants when they questioned her that why she was roaming with a boy from Beary community despite widespread campaign by Hindutva outfits to prevent Hindu girls from making friendship with other community boys. The parents of the victims also rushed to the beach and took them home after the incident.
Suo moto case
Even though the victims did not lodge any complaint against the assailants, Mangalore City Police Commissioner R Hithendra has reportedly directed the jurisdictional Panambur police to suo moto register complaint against the accused.
“The victims are hesitating to lodge a complaint against the miscreants. But, we will consider this incident seriously. I will personally talk to both the victims,” he said.
