Hassan, Sep 23: There is a need to identify a second capital for the State, preferably in the central region, said Patil Puttappa, veteran journalist and Kannada activist.

A few years ago, the State government had constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Chiranjiv Singh, IAS, to identify a suitable second capital for the State. The committee recommended that Davangere be developed as the second capital. œHowever, the government has been sitting over the recommendation. People of Bidar have to travel 675 km to reach Bangalore, he said.
Claiming that he belonged to the entire State, Mr. Puttappa said that politicians should visit all places in Karnataka before taking up foreign trips.
œI see many ministers and MLAs travelling abroad, often. Is there any MLA who has been to all parts of Karnataka? The government, instead of sending people to Israel, Malaysia or Australia, should first send them around Karnataka, he said.
To a student's question about the recent Supreme Court ruling on the medium of instruction in schools, Mr. Puttappa said that the people ruling the State had no commitment towards the language issue.
Principal of the college Roopraj Chandan and others were present. The interactive session had been organised by the college, in association with the Hassan Reporters' Guild.
Speaking at a function organised by the Hassan district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat here on Sunday, Mr. Puttappa condemned the former Minister Umesh Katti's demand for a separate State. œMr. Katti is dreaming of becoming Chief Minister and that is why he is speaking like that. People of Belgaum never demanded a separate State, but people from other places are raking up the issue, repeatedly, he said.
The programme had been organised to felicitate Mr. Puttappa and De. Javare Gowda on the occasion of centenary celebrations of the sahitya parishat. Janata Dal (Secular) supremo and MP H.D. Deve Gowda felicitated both of them.
