These cameras will be installed in the city at various points. Towers have already been put up to install the cameras. These cameras have been functional in several cities of DK District.

District Superintendent of Police Dr M B Boralingaiah was keen on having CCTVs installed in the district ever since he took charge. Accordingly he had conducted survey and submitted a report to the Home Department through his higher officials demanding for 15 CCTV cameras.

With the sanction from the department, the project is likely to be inaugurated by the Inspector General of Police soon.

According to sources, the CCTV cameras will be installed at Syndicate circle and Tiger Circle in Manipal, Udupi Service bus stand and city bus stand, Kunjibettu Sharada Kalyana Mantap Junction, Diana Circle, Sanskrit College junction, Masjid junction, Karavali junction, Santhekatte bus stand, Lion's Circle near Taluk office, Malpe junction and Malpe bus stand.

Separate towers have been installed at various places for the smooth functioning of the system. The cameras have been placed at the centre of the tower and direct connectivity has been provided from the cameras to the control room where the videos can be viewed and also stored.

The advanced cameras can provide 24 hours of vigil and can tap the happening in all the four directions. Since the cameras are provided with high lenses, it can show the pictures up to 200 mts without any distortion. This feature of the cameras is going to be of great help to the police department.

It is said that the SP is also contemplating to install the cameras even in malls and commercial complexes, in collaboration with the private individuals.

In this regard, the SP had even convened a meeting recently and during the meeting the building owners had agreed to the proposal and it is said that the project is in progress.

Is it possible to control crime using CCTV cameras? This is the question that is being heard from various quarters. The answer for this is yes.

The sources in the police department say that though several shops in the city have such cameras installed for security purposes, in case of robbery, the footages from those cameras are hardly of any help to the police due to the poor picture quality.

However, the cameras installed by the police department are advanced cameras which can produce high definition images, which can help the cops in cracking the case easily by giving adequate clue.
