Kollegal, January 25: Five members of a family committed suicide by consuming poison and hanging themselves from a beam at the farmhouse of Shivamallegowda at Bollegowdanadoddi near Tellanur in the taluk in Chamarajnagar district on Tuesday.
Javed Pasha, 48, his wife Shakeela Banu, 35, daughters Yasmin Taj, 22, Tasmin Taj alias Minna, and son Mujaid Pasha alias Shaibu, 20, are the dead.
Sultan Pasha, the other son of the couple, said in a complaint to the police that his parents and siblings had ended their lives as they were under pressure to repay a loan.
A death note stated that no one was responsible for their deaths and that they were ending their lives because of the debt burden.
