Mangaluru, Jun 12: KMC Hospitals revamped its emergency medical department to offer world class treatments to the people of Mangaluru. Owing to rapid expansion of the city, increasing population and foreseeing the need to provide quicker and better services.

Off late the hospital has also been witnessing an increasing number of road accident cases in the age group of 18- 40 years which is mainly due to negligence and carelessness.

Emergency medicine is the medical specialty involving care for undifferentiated and unscheduled patients with illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. The Emergency Medicine department (EM) will now be under the able supervision of Dr. Jeedhu Radhakrishnan who has recently joined the Hospital as a specialist in Department of Emergency Medicine. He has hands on experience and specialization in toxicology, trauma and disaster management.

The department is now equipped with state of the art technology and well-trained and skilled medical staff to handle any eventualities. Additionally, the Hospital has a fleet of hi tech 24/7 Ambulances MARS which is equipped with all the facilities required for a pre hospital care while the patient is being transported to the Hospital. Highly skilled and specialized staff to handle all kinds of emergencies. The Hospital has standard protocol for neuro, gastro and heart emergencies. Additionally they have stat laboratory for immediate blood tests and results. The nurses and paramedical staff are trained in Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) to assist in any kind of surgical and medical emergencies.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Jeedhu Radhakrishnan, Specialist Emergency Medicine, KMC Hospitals said, “Medical emergencies are time sensitive, because the longer the time that elapses before recognition and treatment, the greater the likelihood of morbidity, mortality or disability. The emergency medicine department will work round the clock to cater to the demands and has several offerings lined up for its patients. It has dedicated 24/7 emergency and trauma care, a competent acute stroke management team, 15 beds in the emergency room, emergency radiology services, emergency OT and ICU services. The good news is that patients need not waste more than 3 minutes in waiting and they will immediately be attended.”
The department also follows the best practices of Triage protocols. Triage is necessary to identify those who need immediate care and those who may deteriorate to prioritize care for the remaining patients and to distribute finite resources in the best way. Pre-established triage guidelines or algorithms help identify those most in need of immediate care and can minimize morbidity.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Sagir Siddiqui, Unit Head, KMC Hospitals said, “We are happy to equip our department with the best of technology and doctors to take care of eventualities, as emergency can happen to anyone and this leads to anxiety and panic. The core concepts and strategies of EM care require focused medical decision making and action with the goal of preventing needless death or disability from time-sensitive disease processes (i.e. conditions that must be treated within a certain time period to prevent or minimize mortality or morbidity). EM care has the following components: accessing care, care in the community, care during transportation, and care on arrival at a receiving facility.”

KMC Mangaluru along with the UNITED NATIONS recently organized and participated in the Road Safety Week with the theme of SAVE LIVES#SLOWDOWN. An interactive session with the Mr. TILAK CHANDRA (Asst commissioner of police, traffic division) was also arranged to discuss safe usage of roads. MBBS students also performed a street play in Kadri Park which received a huge response from the general public .

Bengaluru, Mar 15: Former Karnataka chief minister and senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor at his residence in Bengaluru last month.

Yediyurappa, 81, was booked after a woman lodged a complaint saying that she visited his residence on February 2 seeking justice in a rape case against her daughter and sought that a special investigation team (SIT) be formed to look into the case.

According to the first information report (FIR), Yediyurappa allegedly took the minor to a room, closed the door and sexually assaulted her. The woman further alleged in the FIR that when she confronted Yediyurappa, he said that he was checking if the girl was raped or not. Yediyurappa later allegedly apologised and asked the woman not to reveal the matter to anyone.

The Sadashivanagar police in Bengaluru have registered a case under Section 8 (commit sexual assault) of the Pocso Act and Section 354 (a) (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Reacting to the allegations, the former CM said that around one-and-a-half months ago, they (the victim and her mother) had come to his house seeking help and he had taken them inside.

“After listening to her, I called the city police commissioner B Dayananda over phone seeking to address her problem. Later, they spoke against me and I then suspected that there is some health problem with her. I sent them to city police commissioner’s office. I even gave her some money as they were in distress. I came to know that an FIR has been registered and will look into it. But this is what I get for helping someone,” he added.

Bengaluru: The Vokkaliga heartland of the old Mysuru region consisting of several southern districts will be the testing ground for the recently forged BJP-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka in the Lok Sabha polls.

The ruling Congress will now look to consolidate its gains that it made in the assembly elections in May last year when it made inroads into the strongholds of the regional party headed by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda in these districts.

In the 2019 Pariamentary elections, the Congress and JD(S) fought together but secured only one seat each in the state. The BJP bagged 25 out of the total 28 Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress and JD(S) win, in fact, came in the old Mysuru region -- Bangalore Rural and Hassan, respectively, while Mandya seat went to an independent backed by the BJP.

This time, the JD(S) has an alliance with BJP. According to sources, the JD(S) is likely to be alloted Hassan, Mandya and Kolar seats in the region, from where Deve Gowda's party draws its strength from in Karnataka.

The JD(S) is now looking to bounce back after the drubbing it received in the May assembly polls.

The Congress and JD(S) are considered to be traditional rivals in the region, where the BJP has also been improving its vote-share.

The BJP-JD(S) alliance hopes to counter the Congress' surge in the region, determined to consolidate Vokkaliga votes in their favour and banking on the Modi charisma. Both parties also hope to gain from each other with this alliance.

The Congress is hoping to further its prospects and continue its dominance in the region, with the help of its strong local leadership and riding on its five guarantee schemes.

Both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress state President D K Shivakumar, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister come from this region, and so does JD(S) patriarch Deve Gowda and his son H D Kumaraswamy, a former CM and that party's state President.

According to a political analyst, 'coordination among local leaders and transfer of votes between the parties are going to be key for the BJP-JD(S) alliance to click.' Lack of trust between sizeable workers and leaders of both parties on the ground had proved to be counterproductive for Congress and JD(S) combine in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, resulting in their rout and helping the BJP.

Both Congress and BJP have announced candidates for some seats in the region for the 2024 polls.

The Congress has re-nominated D K Suresh, brother of Shivakumar, from Bangalore Rural.

Interestingly, the BJP has fielded the scion of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar from Mysore and noted cardiac surgeon and Deve Gowda's son-in-law, Dr C N Manjunath, from Bangalore Rural.

In Karnataka, the Lok Sabha elections will be held in two phases on April 26 and May 7.

Mangaluru, Mar 18: The rising temperature has become a growing concern for residents of coastal district of Dakshina Kannada, as the issue of drinking water shortage continues to worsen in several parts.

Though the water supply of Mangaluru city has not been affected much, nearby urban local bodies, including Ullal, Kotekar, Bajpe and other parts on the outskirts of Mangaluru have been facing an acute shortage of drinking water.

Though the water level in the Thumbe vented dam across Nethravati River has started going down in the last few days, officials have ruled out possibility of rationing the water supply in the city.

According to officials, the water level at Thumbe dam of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) stood at 5.8 m as against the maximum storage capacity of 6m height on March 16. The water level at the dam during the same period last year was 5.3 metres. The water level reduced from 5.9 m on March 15 to 5.8 m on March 16 due to the scorching heat, causing evaporation.

The MCC has been drawing 160 MLD of water from the Thumbe vented dam. According to officials, without inflow, the maximum water stored in the dam will be sufficient for only 50 days. Meanwhile, the MCC has already started pumping backwater from downstream of the Thumbe vented dam back to the dam using pumpsets. Water from Thumbe dam can be drawn only if it has more than 1.5m of water in it.

DC Mullai Muhilan MP said that the district administration is closely monitoring water levels in all the dams that supply water.

The AMR dam located upstream of Thumbe dam has 18 m of water from sea level. If the water level in the Thumbe vented dam recedes, then water from the AMR dam will be released into the Thumbe dam. There is water in a dam at Biliyoor, which is located upstream of the AMR dam, the DC said.

“Drawing water for irrigation purposes from Thumbe and AMR dams has been banned,” the deputy commissioner said, adding that an order in this regard has already been issued. Some of the pockets in rural areas too have started facing water crisis.

“We have made arrangements to supply water through tankers in Ullal, Kotekar and Bajpe areas. We will not introduce water supply rationing in MCC limits for the time being,” he said and appealed to citizens to use water judiciously.
