Udupi, Jun 25: The Udupi-based Silas International School’s to impose ban on mehendi during Eid al-Fitr has triggered a controversy.
The school issued the bizarre instruction on Saturday, a day before the Eid. "Monday will be holiday on account of Eid. Please note, mehendi is strictly not allowed. A fine of Rs 300 will be charged for those who do so", states the message written on the school diary.
The move has irked some Muslim organizations who have accused the school of violating students' right. "During Eid, all Muslim girls apply mehendi on their hands. Why students of this particular school are not allowed to follow the custom?" they asked.
According to the school principal, the rule has been made by the management. "It is also mentioned in the school diary. This restriction is not particularly for Eid, but for all functions,” he said.
“If a student wants to apply mehendi, parents have to make a request before the function and then permission will be granted. This year, no parents have contacted us for permission," he clarified.
