Mangaluru, Jul 5: The city crime branch of Mangaluru city police has cracked the case of attempt to rob the Kotekar Agricultural Credit Cooperative Bank located on K C Road under Ullal police station limits and arrested two persons.
The accused have been identified as Ramchandra (57) of Kurchigudde, Someshwara and Mohan Kumar (47) of Pandit House, Shivajinagar, Kotekar.
The incident was reported on June 23 when the accused entered the and almost decamped with 20-kgs of gold ornaments valued at Rs 5.5 crore. The accused had pushed aside the watchman of the bank and gained entry inside.
T R Suresh, city police chief said the also went on to threaten the bank clerk - Sudhir Ranjan and gold jewellery valuator Ramchandra Acharya - with a knife. The accused also snatched the mobile phone of the customer - Manohari and forced all of them in to the toilet of the bank and closed the door, locking them inside.
Noting that the accused had covered their faces, Suresh said they then made their way in to the safety vault and decamped with gold jewellery stored there. The trio locked up in the toilet in the meanwhile managed to break open the toilet door and come out. When they spotted the accused trying to make a getaway in a motorcycle parked outside, Acharya threw a big stone at the accused, making them lose their balance, drop the loot in the process and flee the scene.
A case was registered on a complaint from the bank manager, Suresh said adding the CCB sleuths on Tuesday following up on leads detained the duo. During their questioning, the accused admitted to their involvement in the bank crime, Suresh said adding Ramachandra, who works as a security supervisor at a mall in the city and Mohan, a partner in a transport company, resorted to the crime to cover up their business losses and repay their lenders.
Noting that the brazenness of their crime had caused a stir in K C Road area, which is a bustling place along the National Highway, Suresh said CCB sleuths recovered a black Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle from their possession. The accused and the motorcycle has been handed over to the jurisdictional police station for further investigation, Suresh said lauding the role played by CCB sleuths headed by ACP Valentine D'Souza and his team in effecting the arrests.
