Corporate tycoons decide Union budget'

March 7, 2011

Mangalore, March 7: It is the corporate tycoons who run the government and decide the strategies and allocation of funds in the budget in India, said Deepankar Mukharjee, All India Secretary of CITU and Member of Central Board of Trustees (CBT).

He was speaking at District Convention of Karnataka State Provident Fund Pensioners Association (PFPA) on Monday at Town Hall here.

The Union government has allotted a meager amount of Rs 1600 crores in the recently announced budget for the social security fund for the labourers, while Rs 5 crores tax exemption has been made for the corporate tycoons or industrialists, he said, adding that a total of Rs 11,000 crores of direct tax has been exempted for these tycoons.

The pension is supposed to be social security scheme in this civilized world. However, it is disheartening that the government allots a pittance amount to the pensioners neglecting the interest of 46 crores labourers out of 120 crores population. The government is contributing only 1.16 paisa to the fund of pensioners, he said.

“Government should contribute at least 6.42 paisa for every 100 rupees for the fund of pensioners,” he added.

In his presidential address B Madhava, President of All India Beedi Workers Federation demanded the Union government to amend Provident Fund Act, 1952, based on which pension scheme 1995 (EPS-1995) has been formulated. There are more than 28 lakh EPF pensioners under this scheme, some of whom receive pensions of Rs 7 to 10 per month.

He said that the EPS-1995 pension scheme has proved to be a curse for the more than 28 lakh labourers covered under the scheme. There has been no revision in their pension for the last decade and returns of capital and commutation benefits too have been withdrawn in 2008.

S Prasanna Kumar, General Secretary, CITU State Committee, K Pavithran, President, Kerala State PFPA and other leaders of various labourers' organization were present.

Mangaluru: The Mangalore International Airport (MIA) will connect to a new domestic destination with the introduction of a non-stop flight to Tiruchirappalli International Airport in Tamil Nadu.

The non-stop service, once-a-week, will operate on Wednesday (from TIA) and Thursday (from MIA), starting April 3. Air India Express will operate the flight.

The flight is expected to help those taking up a pilgrimage to Vailankani shrine.

Sources from the AIE said that the airline carrier decided to fly non-stop between the two southern Indian cities as a flight to Jeddah, which will start from April 3, arrives from Tiruchirappalli International Airport.

“It is a ferry or positional flight from TIA to MIA. Instead of flying empty, the management has decided to run it as a commercial flight. This will help both passengers and the airline. The airline will deploy Boeing 737-800 aircraft with a 186-seater all-economy configuration on this route.

The same flight, after landing in MIA, will further fly to Jeddah,” a source said.

The flight IX 1498 will depart every Thursday at 5am from MIA to TIA. The TIA-MIA flight IX 1499 departs at 12.50pm. It is a one-hour nonstop flight. The same flights will also operate nonstop between Jeddah and MIA.

The non-stop flight IX 499 will depart MIA at 2.50pm and reach King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah at 6.25pm. The IX498, will depart from Jeddah at 7.25pm and reach MIA early at 3.40am.

Mangaluru, Mar 28: A fish meal factory in the Baikampady Industrial area in Mangaluru was gutted in a fire incident on Thursday, officials said.

The factory is owned by the company 'Shihar Enterprises', they said.

According to the locals, the fire was first noticed at 4.45 am today, which was immediately reported to the fire department.

The fire engines reached the spot and tried to douse the fire, but it had already spread to other parts of the factory. After almost four hours of fire-fighting operation, the blaze was completely doused, officials.

The reason for the blaze is still being probed, the fire department officials said, adding that they suspect an electric short circuit could have triggered it.
