Mangalore, Nov 5: Ullal police have made a headway in bursting a racket which was involved in blackmailing businessmen in Ullal area in specific. Three members of this gang were produced before the Court.
Iliyas from Ullal, Asif from Mukkachery and Shaukath from Boliyar are the arrested. Mubarak, Jalal, Imran, Althaf, Nawaz and couple of young girls from Vamanjur and Kuthar area who helped the three too have been arrested by the police.
It is said that on October 30, Thahir (30), a resident of K C Road, Badriyanagar was kidnapped by Ilyas and gang and was kept captive at a residence belonging to Shaukath at Melkar.
There, Thahir was assaulted and was forced to get intimate with a young girl. The scenes were captured by the gang and soon they started threatening Thahir of publishing the pictures on media.
They demanded Rs 27 lakh from him but, Thahir promised the gang that he would give them Rs 5 lakh on October 31, in Ullal.
Accordingly when the gang was bringing Thahir in a Tata Safari car to Ullal, Thahir managed to escape by jumping out of the car when the car was stuck in a traffic block. He fled to his relative's shop at Thokottu junction and informed about the tale. He then went to the police and sought help. The police plunged into action and nabbed the kidnappers.
The gang has executed a similar plot in August as well wherein they had trapped one Abdullah in the same manner. They had then blackmailed Abdullah showing his pictures with a girl and had kept forth a demand of Rs 5 lacs. However succumbing to the demand Abdulla managed to give Rs 1.5 lac in cash and Rs 2 lac in cheque.
In another instance, the same gang members who had approached Farooq, a juice centre owner in Ullal-Mastikatte had trapped him using the same trick.
Farooq, who was wanting to rent out his house at Akkarekere was approached by the gang members as brokers. They told Farooq that a couple wanted to take the house on rent. When he reached the house to show the house to the couple, the gang reached there and assaulted Farooq, forced him to go close to the woman who came as the customer. They clicked picture of Farooq with the woman and threatened him of showing the picture to his family. However, Farooq gave Rs 5,000 to the gang and jumped off the building and escaped.
Ironically, the gang has a office named 'target' functioning at Mastikatte. Their target is to trap one businessman per month and eke out money from them, informed police sources.
