Udupi, Feb 15: In an apparent attempt to disturb peace in the society, saffron brigades vandalized shops and pelted stones at a police jeep at Brahmavar near here on Saturday.
The vandalism took place during a demonstration jointly organized by Vishwa Hindu Parishat and Bajrang to register their protest against the arrest of an accused in a robbery case.
Police had arrested Dinesh Mendon an accused in a robber case a few days ago. The arrested Mendon is also Udupi district leader of Gorakshaka Dal.
When the protest took a violent turn, police resorted to baton charge to bring situation under control.
It is learnt that a police jeep and at least two shops were damaged by the violent protesters.
Condemning the vandalism, activists of Brahmvar block Congress gathered in front of jurisdictional police station and demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants.
Sources said that three separate complaints have been lodged against the miscreants for three separate act of vandalism during the protest. A tense atmosphere has prevailed in the town following the incident.
