Kasargod, Mar 5: Manjeshwaram MLA P B Abdul Razak set an example for other politicians by donating two acres of land for the landless.
A formal announcement to this effect was made by Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash while presiding over the largely attended Pattaya mela held as part of the State 's ambitious zero-landless project here on Monday.
Mr Razak, who represents the Manjeswaram Assembly segment, donated one acre at Nekraje village in Chengala panchayat, where he resides, and another acre at Kudal Markala village in Paivalige panchayat in his constituency.
The idea to set aside part of his land to help the landless in the district took shape after the Revenue Minister, who had donated 37 cents for the project, urged him to follow suit during an informal discussion recently, Mr Razak said. While the project mandates three cents each to the beneficiaries, Mr Razak urged the authorities to allot five cents each to those accommodated in the land donated by him.
“Unlike in urban localities where there is provision for arranging drinking water supplied by local bodies, three cents of land for a family in a village is not enough to meet their basic requirements,” he said. Earlier, during his stint as president of the Chengala panchayat, Mr Razak had set apart the prize money of nearly Rs.15 lakh received for being chosen as the second-best panchayat in the district in 2002-03 and 2003-04 for building houses in one acre of land donated by him for the homeless.
