Hindutva miscreants attack Muslim girl, fiancé in public; three held

Mangalore, Jul 16: In a shocking incident, dozens of miscreant owing allegiance to Sangh Parivar surrounded a Muslim girl and her fiancé and ruthlessly manhandled them at Ujire in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday.

Jurisdictional Belthangady police have reportedly booked several people and arrested at least three persons based on the complaint lodged by the victims – Mohammed Sabir (21), a resident of Banakal in Mudigere Mudigere taluk and his cousin, a 19-year-old girl from Karkala.

It is learnt that they were reportedly engaged and their marriage date was supposed to be announced shortly.

The bizarre incident of took place when they were waiting for the bus at Ujire. It is learnt that they had come to visit a private college seeking admission for the girl's younger sister.

All of a sudden a group of miscreants apparently belonging Hindutva outfits surrounded the couple and manhandled them.

Sources from Bajrang Dal and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti said that the “mob” mistook the girl to be a Hindu and tried to “protect” her from a Muslim boy.

However, the girl, who is under shock after the incident, said that even though she disclosed her identity, the “terrorists” continued to harass her and her fiancé. She said that the attackers also captured her photos and filmed her using their mobile phones.

A tense atmosphere prevailed in the area following the attack. Security has been tightened in Ujire and surrounding areas to prevent untoward incidents.

The Karnataka government has announced that Nandini milk will become ₹4 costlier per litre starting April 1, 2025. This is the second price hike this year.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Karnataka Cooperation Minister K N Rajanna and Animal Husbandry Minister K Venkatesh said the increase is meant to support dairy farmers by covering the rising costs of producing and processing milk.

Officials also said that:

>> The extra money from the price hike will go directly to the milk producers.

>> The earlier ₹2 price hike (announced on June 26, 2024) will be withdrawn.

>> The new price hike of ₹4 will apply to both 500 ml and 1-litre packets.
