Mangalore, Jul 25: Along with concretisation of the city roads, it is important to increase the green cover in the city. With this goal in mind, Mangalore City Corporation had launched the Green Mangalore' initiative, said Mayor Mahabala Marla.
Speaking at the inauguration of Vanamahotsava' programme jointly organised by Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Union, Mangalore Press Club and Forest Department at Ladyhill, he said that there were separate funds for the development of parks and maidans in the city corporation limits. The purpose of the initiative will be served with the cooperation of forest and horticulture departments along with the support of like-minded associations, he said.
He said that as part of the initiative, saplings would be planted wherever there were vacant spaces around the city.
Chief conservator of forests Dr Sanjay Bijoor, deputy conservator of forests Palaiah, assistant conservator of forests Abbas, Mangalore zonal forest officer Clifford Lobo, city corporation environmental engineer V Madhu were present on the occasion.
DKWJU president P B Harish welcomed the gathering, while general secretary Srinivas Indaje, vice president Jagannath Shetty Bala, Ramakrishna R and Ravindra Shetty were present on the occasion.
