Mangalore, Aug 30: As promised on August 26, Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader met CITU-backed protesters who demanded Rs 5 lakh compensation for kin of auto-rickshaw driver Rifayi who was murdered last month for no fault of him.
Several auto-rickshaw drivers under the banner of Federation of Auto Rickshaw Drivers' Union (affiliated to CITU) had staged a protest dharna in front of minister U T Khader's house last week.
The minister who was unaware of the scheduled protest initially, arranged refreshment for the agitators, thus winning the hearts of protestors.
He had also sent a letter to the protesters promising them to fulfil their demands and promised to meet for further discussion once he is back in town.
The auto-drivers' delegation led by Sunil Kumar Bajal said that the increasing number of revenge killings in Bantwal region posing threats to locals. Government should wake up from deep slumber and stringent action must be taken, he said.
He also warned of further agitation if government failed to compensate innocent Rifayi.
