Kasaragod, Sep 19: A 65-year-old woman was allegedly murdered at her residence at Koolathur in Bedakam village in Kasaragod district. The police have arrested her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in connection with the incident.
The murder of Ammalu Amma, a quarry labourer, came to light after Sharath, 20, informed the Bedakam police on Wednesday that his grandmother had committed suicide by hanging outside their residence.
However, the postmortem report from Pariyaram Medical College confirmed that the woman's death was caused by strangulation.
Based on the report, the police questioned Ammalu Amma's son Kamalaksha, 48, his wife Ambika, 40, and their son Sharath.
T.P. Renjith, Dy.SP. Kasaragod, said, the trio confessed that Ammalu Amma was strangulated by Ambika in whose name their house and 20 cents of land were transferred by her husband after he forced his mother to transfer the property in his name.
Ammalu Amma, who opposed the couple for transferring the ancestral property in the name of her daughter-in-law, was allegedly strangulated by Ambika in the early hours of Wednesday, Mr. Renjith said.
On seeing the seriously injured woman falling down from her cot, the couple, along with their son, took the woman outside and hanged her with a rope.
The accused have been charged under the provisions of IPC Section 302 (murder) and produced before a court here on Friday.
