Mangalore, Sep 20: Hundreds of activists of Bajrang Dal and other Hindutva outfits laid siege to Mangalore Rural Police Station on Friday night questioning the detention of their fellow miscreants who had stabbed and assaulted six Muslim students in the city previous day.
The Hindutva agitators withdraw their two-hour-long protest in front of the police station at around 11:00 p.m. after the police released Bujanga Kulal, Dakshina Kannada district convener of Bajrang Dal, who is said to be the mastermind of the attack on students at Pumpwell bus stop.
The protest in front of the police station began after police managed to arrest nine of the eleven accused in connection with Thursday's attack, wherein a group of miscreants, who came in a Toofan Trax, pounced on six Muslim students and brutally assaulted them and stabbed one among them before fleeing the spot.
The agitators, whose strength was around 300, raised slogans against the police and accused them of arresting œinnocents yielding to the political pressure. Finally, the police had to yield to the pressure of protesters and release the Bujanga Kulal after five hours of grilling.
The arrested are Nitesh, Ganesh, Sanjay, Chetan, Yatish, Amit, Akesh, Ranjan and Satish, all Bajrang Dal activists.
Mangalore City Police Commissioner R Hithendra, who visited the protest-hit station, also failed to convince the agitators to vacate the place. After releasing Kulal, Mr Hithendra told media that police will not yield to any pressure. œPolice will not hesitate to take any person to custody and question, he said.
Mr Hithendra said that a student of Mangalore Institute of Fire Safety Engineering (MIFSE) had taken help of these nine persons to assault Kalandar and other students of the same institue. The police are searching for the student, who was at large, Mr. Hithendra said.
Meanwhile, the six students who were injured in the attack are slowly recuperating.
