Mangalore, Sep 23: Students of various colleges, under the banner of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), staged a protest inside the office premises of Commissioner of Police, Mangalore here on Tuesday, against the uploading of obscene photos of girls studying in private colleges through fake accounts on social networking sites.
Objecting to the obscene photos of students posted anonymously on fake profiles on Facebook, the protestors demanded that cyber crime cell of the police should act immediately on the uploaded photos and take action against those responsible for it.
Addressing the protestors, ABVP district organising secretary Laveen Kotian said that the anti-social elements who indulged in uploading obscene photos of girls on Facebook and thereby subjecting them to disgrace and humiliation.
He said that inspite of being given a three-day deadline to nab the real culprits, the police had failed to arrest any accused in the matter. Efforts must be taken to immediately arrest the culprits and legal action should be taken against them, he urged the police.
Taluk convenor Sudith Shetty and city secretary Jayesh P K also spoke on the occasion, urging the police to consider the matter seriously and take appropriate action against the wrong-doers.
The students submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of Police R Hithendra on the occasion.
A complaint had been lodged at Barke police station few days ago in connection with the issue. Photos with derogatory remarks had been posted as a status on a fake account on Facebook few days ago. Later, they were taken down.
The Mangalore branch of cyber crime police is investigating the case.
