Bantwal, Oct 1: Hundreds of people including students staged a protest on Wednesday demanding rigorous punishment for a miscreant who apparently misbehaved with a college student on Tuesday near Siddakatte in Bantwal.
The angry people resorted to stage protest at Siddakatte, after they came to know that the accused, Siraj (25), son of Abbas, a resident of Sangabettu, who had been arrested for trying to pull the girl towards him while she was walking towards the bus stop, was granted interim bail soon after the arrest. It is said that the girl (19) is victim's neighbour.
Following the incident, a tense situation prevailed in Siddakatte and an undeclared bandh was observed in the town. Most of the shops were closed on Wednesday.
Former minister B Nagaraj Shetty, BJP leaders Rajesh Naik Ulipadiguttu, Thungappa Bangera, G Ananda, Jagadish Adhikari, Sulochana Bhat and VHP leader Jithendra Kottari were among the agitators who gathered at Siddakatte junction and warned the police against bowing down to any political pressure. Students from various schools and colleges also took part in the protest.
Amidst all these developments, accused Siraj was once again arrested by the police and produced before a local court which remanded him to judicial custody for next 15 days. Bantwal Circle Inspector Belliyappa, who visited the place of protest made this announcement and managed to convince the agitators to return home peacefully.
Youth Attacked
Meanwhile, a small group of miscreants among protesters assaulted a youth for video-graphing the protest meet with his smart phone. This incident contributed to increase the tension in the town. Finally police intervened and brought the situation under control. The youth who was assaulted for video-recording was briefly taken into custody.
