Mangalore, Oct 17: Dozens of agitators belonging to Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal on Friday attempted to storm a police station in the city protesting the police action against a rowdy-sheeter.

The protesters, who made a futile attempt to break the barricade in front of Kavoor Police Station, resorted to raise provocative slogans that contained abusive words and racist remarks.

However, the police failed to take action against the protesters, who were demanding immediate suspension of Sub Inspector Umesh Kumar for allegedly assaulting a rowdy sheeter identified as Charan, a resident of Vamanjoor-Moodshedde.

A fresh case was registered against Charan for assaulting a man identified as Rizwan at Vamanjoor a few months ago. Charan had managed to secure bail from court even before police could arrest him.

However, Mr Kumar and two other cops interrogated Charan earlier this month at Kavoor police station. Charan alleged Mr Kumar of assaulting him during interrogation. This had provoked Hindutva outfits in the city. Earlier this week Vishwa Hindu Parishat and Bajrang Dal activists staged protest in front of DC office demanding immediate suspension of Mr Kumar.

On Friday, the protesters led by VHP leader Jagadish Shenava turned violent and dismantled the barricades placed in front of the station. When the police managed to prevent the agitators from barging into the station, they decided to sit in front of the station raising slogans and disrupting traffic for hours. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Pandeshwar division, Ravikumar also visited the spot.

It could be recalled here that hundreds of activists of Bajrang Dal and other Hindutva outfits had laid siege to Mangalore Rural Police Station in September this year protesting the detention of their fellow miscreants who had stabbed and assaulted six Muslim students in the city.

Murder accused

According to Umesh Kumar, Charan is one of the accused in Pitty Nagesh murder case too. He was also involved in attempt to murder case, selling Ganja. His name was registered under rowdy-sheeters' list. œCharan was supposed to visit police station daily and sign on ledger. But he refused to come daily. An FIR has been filed against him, he said.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
