Kasargod, Oct 19: Oommen Chandy, the chief minister of Kerala has owned up the responsibility for withdrawing the case against ABVP activists who had carried out bomb blast and attacked a circle inspector at MG College in Thiruvananthapuram in 2005.
It is learnt that Chandy had taken the decision to withdraw the case on humanitarian ground when 17th accused in the case - Adarsh - filed an appealed to remove his name from the list of accused since he was selected as a police constable. MLA Palode Ravi too had requested the chief minister to favourably consider the request. Adarsh was found to be innocent following an investigation and police had arrested him since he was present inside the campus when the attack occurred.
"He had no direct involvement. The government received a legal opinion that it was not possible to withdraw the case against one person from the accused list. So the court also accepted the government decision to withdraw the case. Even the police officer who was injured in the incident also informed the court he was ready to accept the court verdict," said Chandy.
Earlier, there was a controversy after home minister Ramesh Chennithala claimed that he had no role in the case as the decision was taken in 2012 when he was not the home minister. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, who was the then home minister, pointed out that such a decision would not have been taken by the government without the knowledge of the chief minister. Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan had levelled a similar allegation that such a decision would not be taken without the knowledge of Chandy.
