Kolkata, Oct 25: Close on the heels of negative propaganda by media post-Burdwan blasts, a mysterious incident of attempted burning of a Madrassa student in a village near here, allegedly by a suspected radical group, has given rise to communal tension.

Amiruddin Khan (16), a student was set afire by unidentified persons after tying him to a window of the Madrasa Hafiz-e-Quran at Bhagwanpur Madrassa Darul Uloom late at around 9.15 pm on October 21. Khan, who had stepped out of the Madrassa building for Wazu, suffered 70% burns and is fighting for life at a nursing home here.

There are about 175 students and 17 teachers at this Madrassa. Most of the students come from poor families.

Head Mudarris of Bhagwanpur Madrassa Mufti Yahia Khan told TCN œOn Tuesday night around 9.15pm, Amiruddin, a student of Hifz department, went to the pond just behind the Madrassa premises for Wazu. Barely few minutes later, we heard shouts of'save save' from outside. When students and teachers went outside, they saw Amiruddin tied up to the Madrassa window. He was set afire.

Khan was quickly released and his clothes removed to stop fire. Without delay, he was taken to the nearest Bhagwanpur Primary Health Centre. Police too was called in. Officer In-charge of Bhagwanpur police station Shambhu Das reached the hospital with his team and later also went to the Madrassa for investigation.

Being in a critical situation, Khan was shifted to Tamluk District Hospital and later transferred to Kolkata for better treatment.

Mufti Yahia Khan said, œWhen he could speak, Amiruddin told us about the incident. When he had stepped out for Wazu, then four unknown person picked him up and tied him to the iron grill of the Madrassa window. One of them poured kerosene on his body and set him fire. Moments later, they fled on motorbikes.

The incident has raised communal tension in Bhagwanpur area, which falls under the Bhagwanpur police station of Purba Medinipur district. Police have started the investigation but no one has been arrested till October 23. œA case has been filed at Bhagwanpur police station, we will take necessary action, police superintendent of Purba Medinipur district Sukesh Jain said.

Meanwhile, the Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Hind observed a'Dua day' on Friday. State secretary of Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) Samir Putatunda has demanded a CBI investigation into the incident.

Member of the Bhagwanpur Panchayat Samity Abhijit Das, local social activist Safiullah Mallick visited the madrassa next morning and appealed locals to maintaining peace and communal harmony.

District Jamiat e Ulama e Hind leader Maulana Abdus Samad, informed the secretary Maulana Siddiqullah Chowdhury about the incident, who in turn, met Amiruddin on Wednesday evening at the nursing home here and assured him all help.

After his visit, Chowdhury told TCN, œThe incident is very painful. After the partition of the country, there was never such incident in any of the madrassa premises. The fanatic groups are creating communal riots around the Madrassas in West Bengal. They want to destroy the Madrassa system and create communal tension.

He also vowed that if within a day police did not arrest the culprits, then Jamit e Ulama e Hind will stage a massive demonstration in the Purba Medinipur district.

Putatundu too condemned the incident and said, œA radical group wants to malign the madarassa. They are trying to destroy the communal harmony. This kind of attitude should be stopped. When the NIA is investigating in the state about the madrasa to find out the terrorist activities, then they should take up the Amiruddin case too.

Beside the NIA investigation, Putatunda also demanded a CBI enquiry into the incident.

Amiruddin Khan hails from Shabra village of Paschim Medinipur district under the Belda police station. His brother Sader Khan said, Amiruddin was admitted in this madrasa on 20 August.

œHe had re-joined after the Eid ul Adha vacation on Tuesday. Due to poverty, Amiruddin was admitted here for free lodging, food and study offered by the Madrassa, Sader Khan said, adding, œWe demand immediate arrest of culprits and exemplary punishment for them.

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.

Hubballi, May 17: Karnataka Police have arrested the killer, Vishwa, also known as Girish, in the sensational Anjali Ambigera murder case, police said on Friday.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Vishwa was a habitual thief who exploited innocent young women. The accused is also a drunkard and was caught while attempting to commit theft. He was also part of a gang which stole bikes.

The accused targeted gullible young women, enacting a drama of love and playing the emotional card to forcefully extort gold, silver, and cash from them. When Anjali did not agree to any of his attempts to rob her and outrightly rejected his offer to go with him to Mysuru city, he brutally killed her.

The police had formed two teams to hunt down the killer. One of the teams was searching in the south Karnataka region, and another team, which launched a hunt in Davanagere, nabbed him. The accused was arrested by the police on Thursday.

The police could not catch him sooner as the killer did not carry a mobile phone and did not use his phone for 15 days, before murdering Anjali. The jurisdictional Bendigeri Police were aware of the killer's history, but even after the complaint by the girl’s family, they showed "utter negligence".

The 24-year-old Vishwa entered Anjali Ambigera's (20) residence at 5.30 A.M. on Wednesday and stabbed the young woman multiple times before she could react. Vishwa dragged Anjali Ambigera all over the house, kicking and stabbing her. Later, he pushed her into the kitchen where he stabbed her repeatedly.

Despite efforts by Anjali’s grandmother and two sisters to stop the attacker, he killed her and managed to flee. The incident occurred in the Veerapura Oni area within the jurisdiction of the Bendigeri Police Station.

Vishwa had been blackmailing Anjali and pressurising her to accompany him to Mysuru without informing her parents. The incident which took place close on the heels of MCA student Neha Hiremath’s brutal murder by the jilted lover has raised concern over the safety of women all across the state.

The BJP had demanded the resignation of Home Minister G. Parameshwara while the Congress leaders have also demanded that the Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar should be transferred for failing to sensitise the police force regarding issues of women’s safety.
