Mangalore, Oct 29: After a long gap of five-and-a-half years, the Judical Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court has begun the hearing in the infamous pub attack case where a group of Hindutva vigilantes barged into a pub and lynched young girls and other revelers in broad daylight in January 2009.

One of the accused named in the case, advocate Dinakar Shetty had filed an appeal in the high court five years ago to remove his name from the chargesheet as he was not a part of the group which had attacked young boys and girls in the pub attack case.

Following this, the state high court had instructed the lower court five years ago to stay the hearing of the case, and not to conduct the trial of Dinakar Shetty, who had been mentioned as the 29th accused in the case.

Now, following the approval of the high court, the lower court will look into the case to determine whether or not Dinakar Shetty was involved in the assault on revelers on the fateful day.

Ironically, few of the main accused in the case associated with Sri Rama Sene at the time of attack thereafter have split into five different Hindutva groups. One of the accused Subash Padil, who is also the main accused in the homestay attack case, is now a part of Hindu Jagarana Vedike after exiting the Sene.

Another accused in the case Puneeth Kottary is now one of the chief spokesperson of Bajrang Dal. Yet another accused Prasad Attavar, who was the joint convenor of Sri Rama Sene, exited the organisation and began one of his own named Rama Sene'. Dinakar Shetty is also no longer associated with Hindu Yuva Sene. Only Pramod Muthalik remains a part of the organisation responsible for the attack.

Out of the 30 accused in the name, 17 have already received summons for the court hearing. All of the 17 were present in the court on Tuesday.

Of the 30 accused, 28 arrested were released after receiving bail from judicial custody. The 29th and 30th accused had secured anticipatory bail from the court.

Prior to the Lok Sabha elections in the case, founder of Sri Rama Sene Pramod Muthalik was inducted in the state unit of BJP before being removed from the party. Similarly, Dinakar Shetty had joined the Congress bandwagon in front of AICC member Oscar Fernandes before he was excused by the party members.

Following the attack that took place in Amnesia pub in the heart of Mangalore city, the place shut down and did not re-open. After a period of three years, another pub took over the place and opened in the same spot.

To this date, none of the girls who were assaulted and lynched have come forward to lodge a written complaint against the mob or the assaulters.

The National Commission for Women had then constituted a three-member team to investigate the attack on women in the pub. However, the report prepared by them, which put the blame on the girls, was rejected by the Centre. A few weeks later, the chairperson of the commission Nirmala Venkatesh was inducted into the BJP.

Bengaluru, May 14: JD(S) leader HD Revanna has been released from Parappana Agrahara Jail today, on May 14 after he was granted conditional bail.

He was granted a conditional bail yesterday by a Bengaluru court in connection with a kidnapping case linked to sexual abuse allegation against him and his son Prajwal.

Revanna was arrested on May 4 by Special Investigative Team (SIT) officials in a kidnapping case registered against him at KR Nagar police station in the city. The case is linked to his son and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna’s mega sex scam.

Representing the JD(S) MLA from Holenarsipura, he termed this case a "political conspiracy" against him.

A SIT, constituted by the Karnataka government, is probing the alleged sexual abuse against against HD Revanna and his son Prajwal Revanna.

Prajwal Revanna, the incumbent MP, is seeking another term from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency. The voting for the seat took place on April 26.

Earlier, JD (S) chief HD Kumaraswamy alleged that Karnataka government does not want a fair inquiry.

"They are misusing the office. Nothing is going to happen ultimately. They wanted character assassination of HD Revanna and for that reason, they are using their office," Kumaraswamy told ANI.

Meeting Karnataka Governor Tawara Chanda Gehlot on May 9, a delegation of the Janata Dal (Secular) submitted a memorandum and urged Gehlot to recommend a CBI probe.

Prajwal sill absconding

The JD(S) MP, Prajwal, fled to Germany after Karnataka State Commission for Women Nagalakshmi Chowdhary wrote to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking an investigation into over obscene videos of Prajwal Revanna allegedly sexually abusing several women. He has also skipped summons issued by the SIT to appear before it.

The ‘obscene videos’ involving Prajwal Revanna started making the rounds ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka on April 26, triggering a political slugfest.

A lookout notice against Prajwal Revanna has been issued at all airports in India, along with a Blue Corner notice. A Blue Corner notice issued by Interpol helps countries collect and share information regarding a person's location and their activities as part of a criminal investigation.

Mangaluru: Former MLC Ivan D’Souza on Monday led a delegation to the Passport Seva Kendra in Mangaluru, urging the authorities to provide basic facilities for applicants. D’Souza addressed the media, highlighting the lack of essential amenities at the Mangaluru PSK. “I have requested the authorities to provide basic facilities for people visiting the PSK.

There are no chairs for the convenience of people who arrive at the PSK. They are forced to sit or stand by the side of the road or on footpaths. Additionally, there is no parking facility, no washrooms, and water has not been provided for the public,” the Congress leader stated.

An average of 500 to 600 people from various parts of the state visit the PSK. They have to wait in the scorching heat of the sun, D’Souza mentioned, urging the govt to address these issues promptly. “Officials have agreed to find solutions to the problems faced by the people. Meanwhile, we have also demanded that the PSK be relocated to a more convenient space. We have suggested that the PSK could be moved to the old DC’s office, where there is sufficient space. If our demands are not met, we will hold a protest,” D’Souza explained.

Ashraf Kinara, vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada Waqf Advisory Committee, echoed the sentiment, stating that the authorities should either provide all basic facilities for passport applicants at the PSK or relocate the centre to a better location.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat High School in Harekala, popularly known as Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba’s school, is gearing up to inaugurate its first batch of Pre-University (PU) courses starting June 1.

The government issued an order to elevate the school established by Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba to the status of a PU College a few months ago.

The School Education and Literacy Department (PU Education) has formally sanctioned the upgrade for the school.

CD Jayanna, the deputy director of PU Education, confirmed that all necessary approvals have been obtained from the government to initiate PU classes.

“Hajabba’s school will kick off PU classes for its inaugural batch on June 1. We have appointed a senior lecturer as the interim principal for the PU college. Presently, the school possesses the essential temporary infrastructure to begin the I PU batch. Plans are underway to enhance the infrastructure for the PU college in the future. Currently, the school boasts adequate classrooms and facilities to commence PU classes,” stated Jayanna.

Harekala Hajabba, an orange vendor, personally erected the school in his native village, New Padpu in Harekala, situated approximately 35 km from Mangaluru. For several years, he has tirelessly petitioned the government for the establishment of a PU college.

Expressing his gratitude, Hajabba mentioned that 19 students who recently completed their SSLC examinations are poised to enroll in the new PU college. He added, “We anticipate enrollment from neighboring villages as well. Both the interim principal and the PU education department have been diligently orchestrating the necessary arrangements to initiate classes.”

He extended his appreciation to the government, local representatives, and officials for their unwavering support.
