Mangaluru, Feb 22: In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old student of a private college near here was kidnapped by a group of anti-social elements, brutally assaulted and thrown on a beach on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.
Riyaz, a final year BSc student at Govinda Dasa College, Surathkal, was attacked, days after photographs of a group of male and female students of the college went viral on social media.
The photographs that showed girls and boys belonging to different faiths sitting together inside classroom and campus had attracted communally provocative comments on social media including Facebook. Some commenters had called upon ‘the saviors of Hindu girls’ to punish the Muslim boys who make friendship with Hindu girls.
It is learnt that on Sunday one of the students of the same college, who has links with Sangh Parivar, helped the miscreants kidnap Riyaz, who had also posed for photo along with other friends.
Riyaz was allegedly subjected to a 'serious torture' - the exact details of which yet to be known - before being hurled on NITK beach.
Family sources of Riyaz revealed that one his friends called him in the morning and asked to meet him under some pretext. Riyaz, who had informed the family members that he would be back within a few minutes, never returned even after a long time. His mobile was also not reachable.
The parents, who grew suspicious, approached the jurisdictional Surathkal police station and lodged a missing complaint. In the afternoon a wounded Riyaz was found helplessly lying on the NITK beech, sources said.
