Mangaluru, Feb 26: Minister for Women and Child Welfare Umashree paid a visit to the district Congress office here on Thursday during her visit to the city and addressed members of the women’s wing of the party.
Summarizing the welfare programmes in the state for women and children, she said that the state government had implemented several programmes for women and children through various departments such as Anna Bhagya, Ksheera Bhagya, loan waivers and attendance scholarships for girl students.
In a year and a half, the Congress government in the state has fulfilled almost 90 percent of the programmes promised in its manifesto. If a comparative study is conducted, the number of pro-people schemes introduced by the Congress government and the effectiveness in their reaching the beneficiaries, as compared to the previous governments, will be apparent. Ironically, majority of Congress members do not know to talk of the programmes achieved by the government or their effectiveness, she said.
Land Acquisition Bill
Speaking on the Land Acquisition Bill recently introduced in the Lok Sabha, Umashree said that it was the duty of the union government to give stress to agriculture and farming. But the proposed amendments of the land acquisition bill are giving opportunity to take away the land of farmers without their consent for the sake of industries. The union government should look towards development keeping in mind the interests of farmers, she said, adding that the government should make attempts to protecting the land belonging to farmers.
She said that the present union government seemed corporate-friendly and by neglecting farmers and their interests, the country might be heading on a dangerous course. “With decrease in land used for agriculture and youth from rural areas shifting to cities for their livelihood, we might soon face shortage of food to eat in the country,” she said, adding that the state Congress committee would strongly oppose the Land Acquisition Bill.
Congress district committee members Sadashiva Ullal, Mamatha Gatty, Ibrahim Kodichal, Kripa Amar Alva and others were present.
