Mangaluru, Feb 27: In a tragic serial accident, a tipper lost control on the highway at the busy Nanthoor junction in the city and crashed into an electric pole before colliding with a crane, a car and a motorbike resulting in the death of three persons while three others sustained severe injuries.

Accident 27 1

A woman named Veena (40) and her 13-year-old son Nitesh sitting in an Maruti Alto car were killed instantly in the accident while her husband Krishna (46) and daughter Nikita are said to be in a critical state.

The bike rider Preetham (21) involved in the accident also died on his way to the hospital after sustaining severe injuries when the tipper ran over him. Pillion-rider Shwetha (18) is also said to be critical. It is learnt that Preetham was a resident of Ullal region.

According to a relative of the family, the Nayak family were on their way to Kanyana for a family function. An eyewitness said that the driver of tipper-lorry coming from the Karnataka Polytechnic side towards the junction lost control of the vehicle and hit a crane. It then hit the motorcycle and then the car.

Veena died on the spot. Vijesh, an employee of Mangala Nursing Home, who was near the spot, immediately summoned an ambulance. Injured Nitesh, Krishna Nayak and Nikita were taken to Mangala Nursing Home. Motorcyclist Preetam and his friend Sweta were taken to Tejaswini Hospital.

Nitesh died before reaching the hospital, while Preetam died in hospital. Krishna Nayak has sustained fracture in his legs, while Nikita is in the intensive care unit, the police said.

Bhagyalakshmi, principal of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, said that Mr. Nayak has been serving in the school for the last three years. Traffic movement at the busy junction was disrupted for nearly three hours.

ACP Uday Nayak, along with other personnel and locals, were seen shifting the victims to the hospital soon after the accident occurred at around 5.30 p.m. on Friday.

The driver of the tipper is said to have fled from the spot soon after it rammed into the other vehicles. It is presumed that he lost control over the heavy vehicle due to over-speeding.

The victims were rushed to two different hospitals in the city. The ill-fated car bearing the registration number KA-19-MA-2625 which was rammed by the tipper was reduced to smithreens in the accident.

Protesters Canned

A large group of people resorted to a snap protest expressing their ire over the road accident at the Nantoor Junction here on Friday night. The police had to resort to a lathi-charge when the protesters blocked vehicles on the highway.

The protesters were agitated over the death of three persons at the junction earlier in the evening. They wanted the district administration to take action to resolve traffic bottle-neck at the junction that has lead to several accidents in the past. The protesters wanted Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim to come to the spot.

The area police sub-inspector asked the protesters to meet the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) or the Police Commissioner and submit their memorandum to them. However, the latter did not agree but started stopping vehicles on the highway.

Some among the protesters stopped motorists and forced them to join their protest. The police lathi-charged the protesters, and cleared the roads for traffic.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
