Mangaluru, Feb 28: Towards achieving 100 percent source segregation and bringing the garbage littering in Mangaluru city limits to a bare minimum, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided initiate source segregation in all wards under the city corporation from April 1 at both ward and generator level, informed MCC Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Saturday, she said that the source segregation as into dry and wet waste would be addressed in two ways – Ward level and Generator level. Already, Mannagudda and Mangaladevi wards have been selected on a pilot basis for garbage collection after source segregation. Source segregation can be achieved when 90 percent door-to-door garbage collection coverage can be achieved within March 15, she said, adding that all houses, restaurants and residential apartments would be covered under the source segregation initiative.
The process of equipping all street-sweeping staff deployed with bins has already been initiated and is expected to be completed by March 5. Closed lorry-tippers have been deployed for collection of garbage, completely phasing out usage of open-lorries. Intensive information education and communication (IEC) strategy will be carried out from March 1 onwards to spread awareness of source segregation among the citizens. IEC activities involving visual and print media, FM radio, school and college students and street plays will be carried out along with painting competitions during the entire month to initiate the garbage collection by source segregation by April 1, she said.
She added that the main task for the success of source segregation of waste collected into dry and wet waste was communicating its importance to the public for its better implementation. She also informed that MCC would be making use of Swachh Bharat logo in its entire official correspondence letters from March 1 onwards.
