Mangaluru, Mar 4: DYFI district president Muneer Katipalla said that the residents of the areas affected by the severe pollution levels caused due to the coke and sulphur units of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) located north of the Mangaluru city had filed a police complaint few days ago against the negligence and nuisance caused by the company.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, he said that under the banner of Nagarika Horata Samiti, Jokatte, residents of Jokatte, Thokur, Kalavar, Bala, Kenjar and surrounding areas had filed a complaint at Panambur police station alleging negligence and nuisance to local residents caused by the coke and sulphur units at MRPL Phase III plant. Even after several protests by the local residents, MRPL should have taken cognizance of their problems and taken measures to reduce the pollution levels. However, since they continuously maintain that their coke-sulphur units are not responsible for causing any pollution in the area, a complaint was lodged against the public-sector company, he said.

He informed that the residents’ complaint had been taken cognizance by the police department and a notice had been issued to the company’s general manager to submit the authorisation letter by the government to initiate the coke-sulphur units along with other documents in relevance with the pollution and health hazards such consent letters and no objection documents by the concerned pollution control board.

Although the environmental officer of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Mangaluru had conducted inspection of the surrounding areas and taken samples of the contaminated water sources three weeks ago, no report has been submitted either to the complainants or the company so far. Even the environmental officers have acknowledged the presence of contaminants in the water sources and increasing health problems in local residents, he said.

Mr Katipalla informed that copies of the police complaint would be sent to the Prime Minister, chief minister of Karnataka, home minister, forest and environment minister Ramanath Rai, health minister U T Khader, fisheries minister Abhayachandra Jain and Mangaluru Commissioner of Police. This is a case of attempt to massacre the local residents, he alleged.

Convenor of Nagarika Horata Samiti B S Hussain Jokatte said that along with the thick dust coating the air in the localities, the residents also had to deal with an intense foul smell and continuous noise pollution emanating from the coke and sulphur units. The conveyor belt used by the company to load and unload the coke is approximately 60 metres high, and these coke particles get carried to our immediate surroundings with the wind. Installing a wind-resistant sheet is not a scientific solution to the problem, he said, adding that the sulphur unit had also been operating in the open which posed a severe threat to the local residents in the surrounding areas.

Mr Katipalla further alleged that the relevant pollution control board was not functioning sincerely as the board had neither given notices nor taken action against any major companies in the district found violating the environmental norms.

He informed that the school children from the areas affected by the coke and sulphur units would stage a demonstration in front of the MRPL gate on March 10 against the pollution caused by them. Moideen Sharief and Aboobaker Bava from Nagarika Horata Samiti and Santhosh Bajal from DYFI were present on the occasion.

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.

HSRP.jpg

With the Karnataka transport department extending the deadline for the installation of High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) twice--- in November last year and February, it is no longer planning to extend the same. The department ordered for the installation of HSRP before May 31.

The transport department through a notification in August last year, had mandated the installation on all the vehicles that were registered in the state prior to April 1, 2019. According to transport officials, there are nearly two crore vehicles that are supposed to get HSRP for their vehicles.

“As of now, the state has registered only 34 lakh HSRP installations, despite extending the deadline twice. From nearly 18 lakh installations since February, the numbers have almost doubled. However, there are still a large number of vehicles that have to opt for HSRP,” said C Mallikarjuna, Additional Commissioner for Transport (Enforcement).

“We will wait till May 31 to check for the total number of vehicles that fall in line. We are expecting HSRP installations to touch 75 lakh, after which we will consider an extension as the numbers indicate that people are falling in line and if some more time is given everyone will get it done. However, if we do not reach that number before the deadline, we will request the government not to extend the deadline but urge for an enforcement,” he said.

He also stated that a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed for the first time and if vehicle owners do not fall in line, it will be Rs 1,000 later until they have installed HSRP. “We will wait till the Model Code of Conduct ends and take the government’s opinion. We are going to request the government for strict enforcement if the HSRP installations are not satisfactory,” he added.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Former union minister C M Ibrahim, who was expelled from Janata Dal (Secular) for protesting against party’s alliance with BJP, has stressed on need for a third front not just at the national level, but also in Karnataka.

Addressing a news conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday, he said he’s planning to form a third front in Karnataka along with Lingayat Seer Dingaleshwar Swami.

Ibrahim said that he will tour the state between April 27 and May 4 and that he would meet Dingaleshwar Swami on April 29. “There is a need for the third front in this country. We will try to establish a third front in association with the seer and we hope we will be successful in those efforts,” he said.

Expressing disappointment with the Congress for not doing enough to gain the full confidence of Muslims, Ibrahim said that Congress is concentrating only on certain communities for votes, and ignoring Muslims.

“The Congress is not even caring for Muslims and Dalit votes. In some Muslim areas they did not even hold campaigns seeking votes and trying to convince the communities which never vote in their favour. I fear this may lead to low turnout and Congress may lose its vote base,” he opined.

Mentioning about guarantees on which Congress is strongly relying during this election, Ibrahim said, such things won’t work all the time. “Guarantees will not work anymore. Every election you need to give something new to the voters,” he added.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that Congress is trying to appease minorities for votes, Ibrahim requested both Congress and BJP parties not bring Muslims between them. “I request both parties. Leave us alone. Don’t make us sandwiches for your political sake. We are living with peace and hope even the Prime Minister will understand this,” Ibrahim added.

Launching a broadside against Prime Minister Deve Gowda, Ibrahim said, “Deve Gowda has sold his personality itself. Whatever I have told about JD(S) has come true. I pity, a former Prime Minister should not have come to this stage,” he said.
