Mangaluru, Mar 20: Demanding swift justice in the sexual abuse case of a three-and-half-year-old girl by a school van driver that took place in Thokkottu a week ago, hundreds of agitators staged a mass protest under the banner of Samyukta Muslim Jamaat, Dakshina Kannada, in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in the heart of the city on Friday.

Disappointed over the lack of swift response by the district administration in handling the case and failing to take action against Mangalore One School, which apparently tried to cover up the sexual abuse case, the protestors demanded police action against the school authorities.

Addressing the protestors, English lecturer and activist Pattabhirama Somayaji said that in view of the irresponsible conduct of the school where the girl was studying, the government should cancel the permit given to the management to run the school.

On behalf of the protestors, he demanded that the school management committee should tender an unconditional apology to the public for failing to show an interest in the welfare of the child and making attempts to cover up the sexual abuse. The district administration should take appropriate legal action against the school management and authorities, he urged.

President of Universal Welfare Forum Rafeeuddin Kudroli said that although the accused in the case of sexual abuse of the child had been arrested, no action had been taken against the school which was headed by a retired police officer. Meanwhile, there have been no reactions from the chief minister, home minister or the district in-charge minister in this serious issue. Even a week after the crime, the district in-charge minister has not visited the hospital or enquired about the child and her family, he said, accusing the state government of failing to protect its citizens.

He said that if the same continued to take place, the so-called secular party which was currently non-existent in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, would lose its power even in Karnataka. Referring to the Sangh Parivar stopping students from going on a study tour and unleashing violence in Mudipu, he went on to claim that the communal forces were provided with police protection.

Editor of Sanmarga weekly A K Kukkila said that there should be a deliberation on the crimes occurring in the district to ensure than untoward and communal incidents ceased to take place. Much like the mob-lynching and subsequent death of an accused in a sexual assault case in Dimapur, Assam, the trend in Dakshina Kannada is shifting towards action taken by moral police on the basis of the identity of the perpetrators and not based on the nature of the crime involved. If this communal mindset is left unquestioned, there will be a rise in crimes in the district, he said.

President of Samyukta Muslim Jamaat, Dakshina Kannada Ashraf K made the introductory remarks and demanded swift justice to the family of the girl child and action against the school authorities.

Popular Front of India (PFI) leader Mohammed Haneef, Muslim Central Committee vice-president Hameed Kandak and member Ali Hasan, High court advocate Muzafar, Campus Front of India state general secretary Muhammed Thufail and several others were present during the protest.

Kasargod, Oct 29: At least 154 people have been injured in a fireworks accident at the Anjootambalam Veererkavu Temple in Kerala's Kasaragod district. Among the injured, eight individuals are reported to be in serious condition, with one person in extremely critical condition. The tragic incident occurred just after midnight on Monday during the traditional Theyyam festival, which drew over 1,500 attendees to the temple.

Eyewitnesses stated that the accident was triggered when sparks from firecrackers ignited additional fireworks stored in a nearby room. As panic ensued, a stampede followed, leading to further injuries. Local authorities confirmed that 97 individuals have been admitted to various hospitals in Kasargod, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Mangalore for treatment.

A young girl present during the incident recounted, "The accident took place after sparks from crackers fell into a room where other fireworks were stored. Soon, we were all running away, and I fell down and got injured. My sister escaped unhurt."

Safety Protocols Ignored: Police Detain Temple Officials

Authorities have attributed the cause of the fire to negligence on the part of the temple officials. The police have taken two members of the temple committee into custody for questioning. According to local officials, the temple had stored low-intensity fireworks worth around Rs 25,000 for the festival, which concludes on Tuesday night.

Kasargod district Superintendent of Police (SP) D. Shilpa emphasized that the temple authorities failed to comply with safety protocols, noting that they did not secure the mandatory licenses required for the bursting of firecrackers. District Collector K. Inbasekar confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway, with forensic samples collected from the accident site.

Local CPI(M) MLA M. Rajagopal expressed his condolences, calling the incident "very unfortunate" and reinforcing that safety measures must be strictly adhered to during such celebrations. Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan echoed these sentiments, pointing out the serious lapses on the part of officials responsible for ensuring safety during the festival.

Bengaluru, Nov 1: Hardline BJP leader and Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "Nationalise Waqf Assets", alleging Waqf board of "blatant violation" in claiming of the lands of Farmers, temples and mutts.

Taking to his social media, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal posted on X, saying "I have written a letter to the hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji to Nationalize the Waqf Assets in view of the arbitrary, blatant violation in claiming of the lands of Farmers, Landowners, Temples, Trusts and Mutts across the country by the Waqf board. All the citizens of the country have equal rights on the land. If the motive of Waqf is welfare and social service, this has to be done without bias and religious discrimination as India is a secular nation."

Additionally, Vijayapura MLA also attached the letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his post.

Earlier, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya had accused the Waqf Board of encroaching on thousands of acres of farmers' lands with the support of the Karnataka government.

Surya stated, "There have been multiple press conferences and videos in the public domain where the Minister himself has admitted that these Waqf adalats are being conducted under the Chief Minister's instructions. This is a grave matter, where thousands of acres of farmers' lands are being encroached upon by the Waqf Board with the active support and collusion of the State Government."

He mentioned that, in recent days, farmers from various districts across Karnataka have reported that, without prior notice, ownership of their lands has been abruptly transferred to the Waqf Board.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticised BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, claiming he has done nothing for Bengaluru. Kharge's remarks came in response to the BJP MP's accusations regarding Waqf Board land encroachment.

The Congress leader assured that the Karnataka government is committed to protecting farmers' properties.

Kharge further questioned the BJP's record on protecting temples during its previous government, stating that the Karnataka government is committed to safeguarding temples and common people's properties.
