Mangaluru, Mar 28: A youth from Krishnapur died in hospital two days after he was attacked the city.
Nagaraj Prabhu (35) from Krishnapura was brutally struck with a heavy stone in the early hours of Wednesday when he was sleeping outside a service showroom in Mannagudda, in an apparent murder attempt.
Although the assault is said to have occurred at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, it was discovered in the morning. Nagaraj was miraculously found alive in the morning, despite losing a lot of blood from the heavy blow.
His condition was grave and he was shifted to Wenlock Hospital.
The assailant identified as Gangadhar (45) from Arsikere in Hassan district, was subsequently arrested. He was found by the police at KSRTC bus station at Bejai, where he was arrested on Thursday.
He had been initially booked by Barke police under charges of attempt to murder in connection with assault. However, after the death of the victim, he has been booked under charges of murder.
He was produced before the judicial magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
It is learnt that Nagaraj was assaulted over the spot he chose to sleep outside the service showroom in Sai Niketan building where he was found lying wounded. Reportedly, this spot had already been claimed by Gangadhar, who was infuriated by the presence of Nagaraj and struck him with the heavy stone late in the night.
It is also learnt that Nagaraj, a resident of Krishnapura, had been abandoned by his family owing to his bad habits such as drinking and pick-pocketing. It is said that he had spent jail time in a theft-related case for around three weeks and had been released recently.
