Australian woman defends Muslim couple, shames racist on video

April 17, 2015

Sydney, Apr 17: A young Australian woman has emerged as a hero on social media and in her country after standing up for a Muslim couple who were subjected to racial abuse aboard a train in Sydney.

Stacey Eden, who came to the rescue of the victims, shot a video of the incident on Wednesday and then posted it on social networking site Facebook, drawing thousands of comments ‘likes’ and comments. The video has since then gone viral.

Though racism is rife in Australia, the country is not known to have any overt communal divide. However, the siege of a café in Sydney by a radical Muslim – which had left three people dead including the attacker – has left an undercurrent of tension in the bustling city known for its iconic opera house and the cricket stadium.

Media reports quoted Stacey as saying that she started recording the abuse after witnessing “a good 10 minutes” of it and then taking on the abuser after she had “had enough”.

She said she took a stand to “help defend what is right,” the reports added.

The video shot by Eden begins with a woman in red floral trousers telling a hijab-wearing woman sitting opposite her: “Why do you wear it for a man that marries a six year-old girl?”

The Muslim woman, sitting with a bearded man and a baby in a pram, does not answer.

Stacey then interjects saying: “She wears it for herself, okay? She wears it because she wants to be modest with her body, not because of people like you who are going to sit there and disrespect her.”

The abuse, however, does not stop and the other woman continues, “Your kids behead people.”

Stacey answers again, this time pointing out that what a section of Muslim does is not representative of the entire community.

“That’s not her doing it. That’s a minority of people, not a majority of people.”

When the woman in red trouser brings up the massacre of Christians in Kenya and Muslims murdering each other in Syria, Stacey responds, “What’s that got to do with this lady?”

The abuser is then heard saying, “Nothing, you’re the one that started the argument.”

Stacey reminds the abuser that it was she who started the argument, “If you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything, it’s simple.”

The reports also quoted Stacey as saying that it took “everything in me to hold back on this woman, she made me soo angry! I had to actually stop myself before I got too worked up.”

Stacey said that her intention was to put across a message to all the people.

“The point of this is, don’t sit there putting someone down because they are wearing a scarf, she never did anything, she sat there and didn’t say a word, but I can only imagine how she was feeling inside.”

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.

vivekhebbar.jpg

BJP MLA Arabail Shivaram Hebbar’s son Vivek Hebbar on Thursday, 11 April, joined the Congress party along with his supporters at Banavasi in Uttara Kannada district.

After quitting the BJP, Vivek Hebbar joined the party in the presence of state Congress vice president and former MLC Ivan D’Souza and other local party leaders.

Speculations have been rife about his father Shivaram Hebbar, an MLA from the Yellapur Assembly segment, also planning to join the Congress, ever since he did not turn up for voting during the polls to four seats of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka held on 27 February.

The senior Hebbar’s absence from voting, despite a party whip, had caused embarrassment to the BJP. He had, however, later attributed his absence to poor health.

The BJP had also issued notice to him, which he responded to.

Shivaram Hebbar had recently met Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar but claimed that the meeting was about water issues in his Assembly segment.

The senior BJP leader was earlier with the Congress. He was among 17 Congress-JD(S) legislators, who had quit from their parties, which ultimately led to the collapse of the then HD Kumaraswamy-led coalition government in July 2019.

Shivaram Hebbar had subsequently won the by-poll on a BJP ticket and served as a minister in the then government of the saffron party.
