Karkala, Apr 18: Udupi district crime division along with the help of Karkala police, on Friday arrested an inter-district theft accused named Nagaraj at Pulkeri junction in Karkala.
The accused Nagaraj is a resident of Suntikoppa in Sanoor village in Karkala taluk. The police have seized valuables worth lakhs of rupees found in the possession of the accused.
Originally hailing from Gantinakoppa in Sagar taluk in Shivamogga district, Nagaraj had conducted burglaries in several temples and made away with valuables worth lakhs.
After the arrest, he has reportedly confessed to conducting thefts at Shri Durga Parameshwari temple at Moodbidri, Ayyappa temple beside Karkala bus stand, Rakteshwara temple at Pulkeri, Ganapathi temple at Karkala Miyar, and also robbing valuable items used for pooja at a Nagakatte.
During interrogation, Nagaraj is also said to have confessed to renting a Maruti Omni car from an acquaintance as the getaway vehicle during robberies. According to him, although he had planned to rob few more temples in the district, he had been unable to carry them out during to various reasons.
The valuables seized from the accused have been valued at Rs 2.50 lakh in total. Along with the seized valuables, the accused has been handed over to the Karkala police.
