Mangaluru, Apr 18: Stressing that the proposed drinking water project at Mekedatu in Ramanagaram district would be beneficial for several water-parched districts in the state, veteran Congress leader B Janardhan Poojary has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to abandon the Nethravati diversion (Yettinahole) project and go ahead with the Mekedatu project.
He further stated that the project would not affect the farmers of Tamil Nadu in any way. Water flowing in the rivers in Karnataka should be made available for people belonging to the state. The Mekedatu drinking water project will not only solve the water scarcity problems in several districts in the state, but also reduce the burden of implementing Nethravati river diversion project.
Hence, CM Siddaramaiah should drop the Nethravati project that requires crores of rupees and implement the Mekedatu project, he stressed, adding that Karnataka had a lot to benefit from the Mekedatu project.
Urging the Chief Minister to convince the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu to withdraw its opposition, he said that Tamil Nadu should support the project instead of opposing it.
Calling upon people of Dakshina Kannada to support the state-wide bandh called by various Kannada organisations on Saturday, Mr Poojary said that it was the duty of the people to support the protest against Tamil Nadu’s opposition for Mekedatu project. The government should expedite the project, he added.
