Speaking after inaugurating the blood donation camp at the Nehru Maidan football pavilion, Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation Jacintha Vijaya Alfred spoke on the importance of blood donation. It is equally important to spread awareness among the youth in this regard as every drop of blood is precious, she said, encouraging the participating youth to play in the events with a feeling of harmony towards one another.

Speaking on the occasion, Congress leader K S Mohammed Masood lauded the efforts of the district football association and its members for striving to conduct football tournaments despite the lack of a proper football ground and pavilion in the city.

The old building built 24 years ago which houses the football pavilion, is in a dilapidated state and there are no proper facilities for children and youth to practice football in the ground. The city corporation should take due notice of this and see that basic facilities are provided for children at the football ground, he urged.

Health minister U T Khader kicked off the football tournament for the Under-19 category with a kick of the football.

Speaking in the inaugural programme, he said that talented youth should be given encouragement and offered his support to the development of the football ground.

On the occasion, Indian Red Cross Society, Dakshina Kannada district unit chairman Prabhkar Shriyan said that one unit of blood could help save three lives at a time. The general notion that people have about donating blood should be replaced with an eagerness to donate, as it is the highest form of donation, he said, adding that all healthy individuals between the age of 18-60 years could donate blood once in 3-4 months.

Speaking on the occasion, chief organiser of the event D M Aslam pointed out the lack of a proper ground and basic facilities for football players in the district. He said that several youth and sports enthusiasts had joined hands in organising the sports festival despite the lack of a proper ground at Nehru maidan.

He placed a request with Mr Khader, who is also MLA of Mangaluru constituency, to help set up a full-fledged football ground in Ullal, since there was no existing playground in Ullal for several talented football players in the area.

A K Niyaz, Mansoor Ahmed, corporator Abdul Latheef, president of the association Khalid Basha, Umesh Uchil, Hussain Bolar and several others were present during the inaugural session.

Bengaluru, Mar 19: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said that the Congress will split in three months after the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and its impact will be visible on the Siddaramaiah-led state government.

"Due to internal squabbles, the state government will not last long," the BJP leader said.

Talking to reporters on Monday, he said the sitting MP from the Gadag-Haveri constituency, Shivakumar Udasi, has done a lot of development work and implemented the Central government's schemes effectively.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will surely become the PM for the third time. The overall response has been good in the Gadag-Haveri Lok Sabha constituency," the former Karnataka chief minister said.

Asked if he was contesting the election in a half-hearted manner in the Gadag-Haveri seat, Bommai said "such a question does not arise when the party's high command gives instructions".

He said he would respect his opponent and not take anyone lightly.

The 49-year-old Mangalurean, has been working for a Maintenance company in Jeddah for more than 13 years. He is known for his efficiency and sincerity in the company with good experience in his field of work.

His company usually assigned him on duty in Jeddah sea port to take the delivery of the goods consigned to his company. As a part of his duty, he normally takes pictures of the goods before the transportation. He did the same in February 2023 too.

The security personnel informed the police about his act that amounts to be a violation of the port security rule. He was unaware of the rule as he was doing it normally in the port during the release of the goods. Since then, he was detained by the police on the charge of photographing inside the port premises. After more than 6 months detention, he was released and allowed to work in the same company.

The detainee’s brother based in Jeddah was constantly pursuing the case.

P A Hameed Padubidri, a pro-bono NRI lawyer and social worker based in Riyadh, extended his socio-humanitarian help in this case upon the request of his family and relatives.

He actively involved trying to set him free from the jail on humanitarian grounds with the coordination and help of the Consulate General of India (CGI) Jeddah. The CGI keenly followed up the case with the concerned Saudi authorities. He was released from the jail recently and shared his happiness with his family and thanked good samaritans.

Mangaluru: In the wake of complaints regarding middlemen menace, sleuths of Lokayukta on Friday, March 15, conducted a raid at the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority.

The Lokayukta team found unaccounted money and several files, which were not disposed of for a long period.

Lokayukta SP CA Simon said that the Lokayukta has received complaints that middlemen have been interfering in the MUDA office, and files pertaining to the public are not being cleared on time.

A raid that commenced in the evening on March 13, lasted for 18 hours. During the raid, Lokayukta officials found cash in a bag in MUDA office, and also with officials and others. MUDA officials could not inform the source of money found in their office, the SP said.

Further, he said that many people gathered at the MUDA office during the Lokayukta raid, and have raised complaints about the harassment at the urban development authority. “We have gathered evidence for MUDA officials carrying out file disposal processes through brokers on phone calls. The investigation on the MUDA network will be continued,” he said.
