Mangaluru, Apr 27: Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr S D Sharanappa on Monday inaugurated the women and child helpline kiosk at the office headquarters at Pandeshwar here, to facilitate direct addressal of complaints and grievances received through the helpline.
The helpline, which will be directed to the kiosk for redressal of complaints from distressed members of the public, will be operated by two personnel appointed by the police department in association with the district units of Child Line and Women and Child Welfare Department, for the time being.
Briefing mediapersons after inaugurating the helpline kiosk, Mr Sharanappa said that as part of community policing by the police department, the helpline redressal system was a co-ordinated effort with the help of teamwork, for distressed victims of violence to seek legal help and support system for their grievances. The main intention behind the helpline kiosk is to provide a comprehensive solution for any problem, and people should make use of the helpline when necessary, he said, adding that the ultimate objective of the helpline was to preserve the social health of the society by offering interim solution or relief to victims.
He informed that the police department had been chalking out effective programmes for the public and training workshops for police personnel for improving their soft skills. As part of surveillance, the police department had started monitoring social media content in order to check the spreading of inflammatory and provocative messages from miscreants. Training will also be given to subordinate level police officers on cyber crime and ways to tackle it, he said.
The Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU) will coordinate and operate the helpline, which will be operational round the clock, all days of the week, he told pressperons.
The helpline services can be approached with the number ‘1098’ along with the prefix code - 0824
Meeting of school, college managements
Mr Sharanappa also informed that the police department would conduct a meeting of various educational institutions including private schools and colleges in the district limits on Tuesday, in order to ensure preventive measures in the institutions with respect to crimes against children.
