Mangaluru, May 5: For the first time in Karnataka, a sophisticated sports injury centre has been set up in Bengaluru specifically to provide medical treatment and rehabilitation to injured sportspersons within a short period of time, said Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader.
Announcing this at a press conference at Circuit House here on Tuesday, he said that the intention of setting up a sports injury centre was to enable injured sportspersons to get back into their game within a short period by providing them with the best medical treatment and physiotherapy.
Doctors and specialists trained in sports medicine, including physiotherapists, will handle injuries sustained by athletes and sportspersons and provide them with specific treatment in the centre, he said, adding that the centre was almost ready for use.
He said that the sports injury centre would be housed at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics (SGITO) in Bengaluru at an approximate cost of Rs 2-6 crore.
On the occasion, Dr Madan Ballal said that the sports injury centre would be equipped with latest arthroscopic equipment to treat all types of ligament injuries and joint injuries. The centre will be equipped with a trauma centre, a modular operation theatre (OT), sports physio centre and a separate ward for injured sportsmen. Since most injuries do not need surgical procedure, they can be rectified with specific exercises and rehabilitation which will enable the sportspersons to get back on the field within a short duration, he said.
Mr Khader said that the treatment would be provided to injured sportspersons without any cost, except for implants such as pacemakers if required. This will be facilitated by a surgical centre that will come up as a part of the sports injury centre, he said.
In the initial stage, there will be 3 trained medical specialists along with a physiotherapist in the sports injury centre, he said, adding that upcoming sportspersons would also be treated in the specialised centre.
