Not only under Modi rule, Muslims feeling alienated since 1947: Heptulla

May 24, 2015

New Delhi, May 24: Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla has rejected the contention that Muslims are feeling insecure under the BJP-led regime and said the community has felt alienated since Independence because of the policies of successive Congress governments.

Najma Heptulla
"Muslims are alienated because they are economically and educationally backward. Now people are saying these utterances (against Muslims) are making them feel alienated.

"It is not that today Muslims are feeling alienated. Muslims have been feeling alienated since Independence, because they have been relegated to such backward situation," Heptulla said.

She was responding to a query whether objectionable comments and hate speeches by right wing elements were alienating the community under the Modi government.

"They were alienated already, relegated into backward situation, because they were educationally and economically alienated and social alienation is linked to it. This is the genesis of the whole situation. You just don't feel alienated that somebody made a statement," she asserted.

Attacking the Congress, the Minority Affairs Minister said in its successive regimes, the party only lent "vocal support" to Muslims while the present government has put things into motion through policy initiatives and programmes.

The Minister, however, refused to react specifically to objectionable utterances by some BJP leaders and ministers or the controversy surrounding 'Ghar Wapsi' programme and the ban on beef in some states.

She also dismissed a US religious panel report that communal atmosphere in India has been vitiated since the 2014 general elections, and said people sitting abroad are often far removed from reality.

"People sit somewhere and prepare reports. They don't realise what kind of sensitive fabric Indian society is. In villages, Hindus and Muslims live together and for centuries.

"People who try to create dissent and divide in the country don't understand... They sit abroad in America and make such reports," she said.

Hitting out at Congress, Heptulla said the party which has still not owned up responsibility for the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, was talking of the interests of the minorities.

"During their rule, Sikhs were massacred. It was a genocide. Did they take the responsibility? Today people are living in transit camps and they are talking about minorities," Najma, who quit Congress in 2004, said.

She referred to the recent evacuation of Indians from strife-torn Yemen, majority of whom were Muslims, to drive home the point about BJP's commitment to the cause of the Muslims.

"Today not many Muslims are there in Government service. BJP did not do it. RSS did not do it. There was Congress in the Government. They are responsible for it," Najma said.

The Minister said the budgetary allocation to her ministry was not reduced this year though there was a 10 per cent additional devolution to the states.

A proposal to increase the authorised share capital of the National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 3,000 crore was also cleared by the Union Cabinet in February this year, something which the previous UPA government had failed to do, she said.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage.

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.

In an intriguing turn of events, authorities have levied a fine against an actress for breaching traffic regulations depicted within a television serial.

In the 14th episode of the popular serial ‘Seetha Raama’ a Kannada language drama series airing on Zee Kannada, a scene featuring two individuals riding a scooter caught the attention of viewers. While the rider adhered to safety protocols by wearing a helmet, the actress on the pillion did not.

Jayaprakash Yekkur, a vigilant resident of Mangaluru, took swift notice of this discrepancy and promptly lodged a complaint with the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner. Yekkur underscored the concern that such portrayals of traffic violations by actors and actresses could potentially convey misleading messages to viewers, particularly those who are impressionable. He urged authorities to take decisive legal action against the actress, the serial’s director, and the broadcasting channel.

In response to Yekkur’s complaint, the Commissioner of Police forwarded the matter to the Mangaluru Traffic Police station. Subsequently, notices were issued to the owner of the two-wheeler featured in the scene and the serial’s director. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the scene had been filmed in Nandini Layout, Bengaluru, and was referred to the Rajajinagar police station for further scrutiny.

On May 10, after thorough inquiries, the Rajajinagar police station imposed a fine of Rs 500 on both the actress and the owner of the two-wheeler. Furthermore, the production manager of the serial committed to adhering strictly to traffic regulations in future episodes.

Expressing his contentment with the resolution, Jayaprakash Yekkur commented that the prompt response from the police, coupled with the imposition of a fine, serves as a valuable lesson and contributes significantly to enhancing public awareness.
