Udupi, May 27: The last rites of three unidentified bodies lying unclaimed since a month in the mortuary at Ajjarkadu government hospital were performed at Beedinagudde on the outskirts of Udupi on Tuesday, due to lack of storage space at the mortuary.
The last rites and funeral were performed under the aegis of Udupi district Nagarika Samiti.
Although there is storage space for nine bodies at the mortuary at Ajjarkadu hospital, seven unidentified bodies had been kept unclaimed since over a month at the mortuary. Due to this reason, the hospital was facing problem of storing bodies of locals who had recently passed away.
Noticing this problem, general secretary of the Samiti Nithyananda Olakadu obtained permission from the local and district surgeon to give a decent burial to the unclaimed bodies.
Among the seven unclaimed bodies in the mortuary, the post mortem of three bodies was conducted and were accordingly buried at a burial ground in Beedinagudde along with the cooperation of Udupi town police and city corporation.
The Samiti informed that the remaining four bodies would be buried in a few days after necessary formalities were completed.
