Mangaluru, May 29: Former International cricketer Javagal Srinath urged the students not to make compromise with education if they want to become good cricketers.
Speaking at a felicitation and certificate distribution ceremony held under the aegis of Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association on Friday, he said that a good student indeed will be an excellent cricketer too.
He said education, club culture and support of parents are the essential elements required for children to scale greater heights in cricket.
"Education too is essential for a budding cricketer. You may feel clubbing education with cricket a tough task in life. Going by the experience of cricketers like me, Anil Kumble and Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who have pursued engineering, it is not a difficult task to club education with cricket. Further, cricket is security in life too. Many may not be able to scale greater heights in cricket. In such circumstances, one may think of opting another career in life," Srinath said.
Club culture is essential for boys to learn more in cricket and it builds loyalty among children. Hence, boy should show enthusiasm in club culture while undergoing training in cricket. At the same time, children should also club cricket with education," he advised budding cricketers.
Parents need not be anxious if children could not pass the cricket team selection at their tender age, he advised. "It is true that 16, 17 and 18 years are crucial period for budding cricketers to start their career in the sport. Parents need to be patient that a boy can shine in cricket even at the age of 21. In shaping a budding cricketer, 80% of consistency comes through support of parents," he said adding that parents play a vital role in shaping a child into a best cricketer.
Srinath said that regular practice is most essential in a cricketer's life. "No matter, if you bunk practice for a whole month during examination, but be punctual for practice at least for two hours a day during remaining months. Parents should not deny opportunity for children to watch cricket on TV," he said and added that cognitive learning skill also plays a major role in shaping a cricketer.
"Make K L Rahul, who is Mangalorean, as your role model. You can do wonders in cricket," Srinath advised cricket buffs of Mangaluru.
